According to MacRumors, the upcoming Chrome update, currently in beta testing, will require devices to run iOS 17 or newer. This move by Google follows Apple’s lead, as the company stopped providing OS updates for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X models with the release of iOS 17. Millions of people worldwide still use these phone models.

Consequently, users of these devices will be unable to install new versions of Chrome and will be stuck with the current version. Similarly, this change also applies to older tablet models, including the 5th generation iPad, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st generation), as the new Chrome version requires iPadOS 17 as well.

Chrome will not be available on Apple’s iPhone models prior to the X.

This is not an isolated move by Google to tighten support for older devices. Recently, the search giant also released an update for the YouTube app, requiring devices to run iOS 16 or newer. This move cut off updates for a range of devices, including the iPhone 6s, 7, and the first-generation SE. The simultaneous discontinuation of support on both YouTube and Chrome indicates a clear strategy by Google: to focus resources on developing for newer operating systems, ensuring performance, stability, and, most importantly, critical security patches.

The upcoming Chrome update will require iOS 17 or newer

Google has not yet announced an official release date for the new Chrome version. Affected users can continue using the current Chrome version, but they will not receive any new features or security updates, potentially exposing them to risks while browsing the web.

However, for iPhone users, this may not be a significant concern as they have Safari, Apple’s native browser. Safari is perfectly optimized for both hardware and software, resulting in smoother performance and significantly better battery life compared to its competitors. Moreover, Safari excels in privacy with its Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature enabled by default, protecting users from intrusive ads. With Chrome’s upcoming update dropping support for older models, returning to Safari not only offers seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem (such as iCloud Tabs and Handoff) but also provides the most reliable solution for online security and safety.
