On June 12, with 461 out of 465 delegates voting in favor, the National Assembly passed a resolution on the rearrangement of provincial-level administrative units for 2025, which took effect immediately.

According to the resolution, there are now 34 provincial-level administrative units in Vietnam, including 28 provinces and 6 cities. This was achieved through the merger of several provinces and the formation of new provinces and cities. The resolution outlines the specific mergers and the resulting administrative units, with a focus on maintaining effective governance and representation for the citizens affected by these changes.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of a seamless transition and calls for urgent preparations to ensure that the local governments of the newly formed provinces and cities are operational by July 1, 2025. In the meantime, the local governments of the provinces and cities prior to the rearrangement will continue their functions until the new administrative units are officially established.

This significant restructuring aims to streamline governance and enhance administrative efficiency in Vietnam, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s ongoing pursuit of effective and responsive public administration.
