Vietnam’s exports of vehicles and auto parts in May 2025 surpassed $1.4 billion, a 5% increase from the previous month. In the year so far, exports of these goods have totaled $6.7 billion, an impressive 8.6% rise compared to the same period in 2024.

The United States is Vietnam’s largest importer of these goods, with a trade value of over $1.37 billion, marking an 8.4% increase from the previous year.

Japan follows closely behind with imports totaling over $1.32 billion, a significant 14.1% surge. South Korea takes third place, contributing nearly $700 million, a modest 2% increase compared to the first five months of 2024.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, exports of auto parts from Vietnam have maintained a double-digit growth rate in recent years. This positive trend can be attributed to the shift in production from larger markets like China to smaller but promising markets in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. Additionally, Vietnamese enterprises are aligning with the demands of large-scale manufacturing and are increasingly integrating into the global supply chain.

Experts from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) highlight that Vietnamese businesses possess a strong advantage in manufacturing automotive wiring, ranking as the third-largest exporter of this product globally, after China and India.

Automotive power cables produced in Vietnam are now being imported by major automotive hubs such as Japan, the United States, the EU, and even Thailand, solidifying the country’s position as a crucial link in the global automotive assembly supply chain.

Economic experts predict a promising future for Vietnamese enterprises in the automotive component manufacturing and export industry, provided they seize emerging opportunities. In the years to come, exports of automotive components and parts are expected to become one of the most valuable billion-dollar export sectors in Vietnam.

As announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), since May 3, 2025, the United States has imposed a 25% tariff on 332 automotive part import items, including mechanical, electronic, drive, and control system components. This move follows the Trump administration’s recent decision to reinstate tariffs on fully assembled cars in April, aiming to protect the domestic automotive industry and reduce the trade deficit.

Experts suggest that Vietnam should invest more heavily in production technology, quality management, and digital transformation while fostering FDI cooperation in the auxiliary industry. There is also a need to expedite the development of specialized industrial parks with synchronized logistics and infrastructure to attract major partners such as Japan, Germany, the United States, and South Korea.

Projections indicate that 2025 will be another prosperous year for exports of automotive components and parts. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s plans, by 2045, the industry will focus on producing electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicles. The goal is to achieve exports of approximately $14 billion by 2030 and further increase this figure to $36 billion by 2045.
