According to recent figures from Taiwan, the country exported six times more rice to Japan in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported on June 9 that exports reached 7,759 tons from January to May. Export volume is expected to exceed 10,000 tons for the whole year, more than two and a half times that of 2024.

Japan, which is facing an unprecedented rice shortage, is considered the primary market for Taiwanese rice. Taiwanese rice is believed to be similar to Japanese rice in terms of variety, cultivation techniques, and flavor. However, Taiwanese rice is only half the price of Japanese rice, giving it a competitive edge.

Taiwan is currently leveraging these advantages to boost rice exports to Japan. On the same day, Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih visited a rice-producing area in Hsinchu County, northern Taiwan, to inspect rice destined for Japan. As Taiwanese people are moving away from rice with their diverse food culture, the Ministry is focusing on promoting exports to support rice production.

From 2020 onwards, Taiwan has exported an average of around 3,500 tons of rice to Japan annually. Export prices to this market have doubled, rising from TWD 441 (USD 13.6) to TWD 870 per 5-kg basket since the beginning of this year.

The Japanese government imposes strict import measures to protect domestic rice production. The country allows the import of 770,000 tons of rice annually, of which the government purchases 670,000 tons for reserves.

Only a quota of 100,000 tons of rice is offered to foreign importers under the tariff-free quota in Japan. Most of this quota is allocated to the US and Australia, while Taiwan and other markets share the remaining portion.

Taiwanese rice has penetrated the food supply channels of various organizations in Japan, including schools, hospitals, and care facilities, as well as retail distribution in supermarkets.

The Dainan Research and Extension Station stated that their Dainan No. 11 rice variety meets Japan’s pesticide residue standards due to strict fertilizer and pesticide control. Last September, 2,400 tons were exported to the Land of the Rising Sun. In addition to Japan, this rice variety has also been exported to Singapore and Australia.
