At the meeting with Nike, the Minister appreciated the corporation’s long-term and responsible presence in Vietnam – where about 50% of Nike’s global shoe production is made, providing employment for more than 450,000 workers. He also shared concerns about the potential impact of the current tax policy on Nike’s global supply chain and the interests of US consumers.

Accordingly, the Minister proposed several appropriate support orientations for Nike’s activities in Vietnam. He affirmed: “Vietnam does not consider Nike simply as an investor but as a strategic partner in sustainable development and international integration.”

In the afternoon, at the meeting with Walmart, the world’s largest retail corporation, the Minister acknowledged Walmart’s contribution to promoting Vietnamese goods in the global market and suggested that the corporation expand its procurement of high-value-added and environmentally friendly products. He also proposed that Walmart consider building a strategic sourcing center in Vietnam and coordinate to enhance supplier capacity through technical standards sharing and training.

Regarding the difficulties that Walmart is facing in doing business in Vietnam, the Minister of Industry and Trade affirmed that he would coordinate with the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies to review and improve policies to ensure transparency and compliance with international practices.

Emphasizing the role of the US business community in the context of the reciprocal trade agreement negotiations entering a crucial phase, the Minister called on Nike and Walmart to voice their strong support and promote an early and fair, balanced, and sustainable agreement between Vietnam and the US.

The Minister affirmed that Vietnam not only wishes for Nike and Walmart to continue their successful development in the Vietnamese market but also considers the two corporations as strategic partners in the effort to promote the building of a green, transparent, flexible, and sustainable supply chain, contributing to enhancing deep economic connectivity between the two countries.
