On the morning of June 13, local time, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson. The two leaders highly appreciated the traditional relations between the two countries and agreed on strategic orientations for cooperation in the new phase.

At the talks, Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson congratulated Vietnam on its achievements in socio-economic development and international integration. He affirmed that the Swedish Government and people always attach importance to relations with Vietnam and wish to promote cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, digital transformation, green transition, innovation, and response to climate change.

The two Prime Ministers affirmed that this is the time for the two countries to renew their relations and strive for an upgraded relationship, based on a “glorious past and bright future”. They agreed to increase delegation exchanges at all levels, especially at the high level, and people-to-people exchanges to strengthen political trust and mutual understanding, thus laying a foundation for expanded cooperation.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that good political relations are the basis for the two countries to promote cooperation in defense, security, and sharing of experience and coordination in global issues, especially in the context of rapid and unpredictable international changes.

The two sides also agreed to continue close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN-EU, and to promote Vietnam-EU and Sweden-ASEAN relations, contributing to addressing global challenges.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assessed that Vietnam and Sweden can complement each other: “Sweden has strengths in technology, innovation, and digital transformation; Vietnam has an abundant labor force, a market of more than 100 million people, and is a gateway to ASEAN with a population of 700 million.”

In terms of trade and investment cooperation, the two sides pledged to continue creating more favorable conditions for goods to access each other’s markets through the effective implementation of the EVFTA agreement. The goal is to raise two-way trade turnover to 3 billion USD in the coming time.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested that Sweden promote the remaining EU countries to soon ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the European Commission to soon remove the “yellow card” for seafood from Vietnam.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson shared that Sweden is proud that Ericsson Group has been present in Vietnam very early, accompanying in the field of telecommunications and information technology. On this occasion, the two Prime Ministers agreed to upgrade the relationship to a Strategic Partnership in the fields of science, technology, and innovation, while promoting cooperation in high technology, semiconductors, nuclear energy, green transition, digital transformation, and linkage in training high-quality human resources.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on Swedish businesses to strengthen investment in areas suitable to Vietnam’s development orientation such as green economy, digital economy, circular economy, renewable energy, and urban planning.

In the fields of culture, sports, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, the two sides pledged to increase sharing of policy experiences, promote the image of each country, and create favorable conditions to attract tourists to visit each country.

The Prime Minister thanked Sweden for its interest in supporting the community of Vietnamese people living here and suggested continuing to create favorable conditions for the community to stabilize their lives, integrate into the host society, and act as a bridge of friendship between the two countries.

On international and regional issues, the two leaders reaffirmed their support for peaceful solutions to conflicts on the basis of respect for the UN Charter and international law. Regarding the South China Sea issue, the two sides agreed that disputes should be resolved by peaceful means, in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS, contributing to ensuring stability, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the region.
