Hanoi police have provided an update on the arrest of Pham Dinh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Chuong My District’s Chu Son Town, for his alleged involvement in the production and trade of counterfeit medical alcohol.

According to authorities, Tuan’s brother, Pham Dinh Dung, was also arrested for the same offense. In April 2016, Tuan established MCB Vietnam Trading and Production Company, specializing in alcohol and physiological saline production. In 2018, he changed the company’s name to Ngan Ha and appointed his brother as the director, despite being the one in control of all operations.

Initially, the company produced medical alcohol using ethanol as the main ingredient. However, in early 2023, Tuan switched to using methanol (industrial alcohol) due to higher profit margins. He instructed employees to mix methanol with RO water, bottle the mixture, and sell it at his directed price points. The methanol-based alcohol was sold for VND 11,000 per 500ml bottle, while the ethanol-based alcohol was priced at VND 12,000-13,000 per 500ml bottle.

Hanoi’s Economic Police seized over 18,800 bottles of 70-degree alcohol and more than 16,700 bottles of 90-degree alcohol, worth approximately VND 382 million according to Ngan Ha’s selling prices.

Laboratory tests confirmed that the seized products, labeled as “70-degree Ethanol” and “90-degree Ethanol,” did not contain ethanol as declared on their packaging but instead contained methanol. On June 15, Hanoi police decided to temporarily detain both Pham Dinh Tuan and Pham Dinh Dung, and the investigation is ongoing to bring all involved to justice.
