On June 24, Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, chaired a meeting to discuss the power supply plan for the last six months of 2025 and the development of the 2026 power supply plan, accelerating the progress of key power source and grid projects.
Pham Nguyen Hung, Director of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, reported that the cumulative electricity production for the first six months of 2025 is estimated at 156.4 billion kWh, 3.04% higher than the same period in 2024, and accounts for 45% of the 2025 plan (347.5 billion kWh). The main reason for this increase is the lower national temperature compared to previous years, resulting in lower electricity demand than initially forecasted.
However, to ensure a stable power supply, the national power system still needs to reserve the mobilization of oil-fired thermal power plants and LNG sources to meet the load demand, especially during peak hours in the southern region when solar power is unavailable.
Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized the importance of guaranteeing power supply under all circumstances.
Regarding load forecast, the Minister requested Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to coordinate with NSMO in forecasting electricity demand growth, evaluating commercial electricity components, and assessing the impact of the increasing number of distributed energy sources, particularly rooftop solar power.
“Proactively coordinate with local electricity companies to maintain, upgrade, and enhance the capacity of the power grid infrastructure to absorb the rapidly growing rooftop solar power and ensure technical safety in the new operating conditions,” emphasized Minister Nguyen Hong Dien.
In terms of accelerating the progress of key power source and grid projects in accordance with the Power Development Plan VIII and its implementation plan, the Minister highlighted the focus on large and significant power source projects such as An Khanh (Bac Giang), Nhon Trach 3 and 4, Quang Trach 1, Hiep Phuoc Phase 1, and other key projects.
The goal is to commission these projects according to the planned schedule in 2025 and the following years. Ensuring the progress of key projects is crucial as they are intended to commemorate significant national events such as the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.
Regarding the timely resolution of difficulties and obstacles in renewable energy projects, especially in the spirit of Resolution 233 issued by the Government in 2024, the Minister urged relevant units, particularly EREA, the Legal Department, NSMO, and energy corporations, to promptly propose competent authorities to handle these issues appropriately, ensuring legality and fairness in the treatment.
“We must not allow half-hearted resolutions or inconsistent approaches that disrupt industry investment standards, undermine business confidence, and create unnecessary legal conflicts in the state management process,” the Minister asserted.
