The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project is making significant progress with the successful transportation of two super-heavy transformers to the construction site.

According to EVN, Mr. Doan Ba Thuc, Deputy Director of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project Management Board, EVNPMB1, and relevant units have recently completed the transportation of two Siemens transformers to the construction site. These three-phase 15.75/525 ± 2*2.5%kV, 294MVA transformers are designed for outdoor use.

As of June 24th, both super-heavy transformers, weighing over 200 tons each, have been successfully transported to the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project site in Hoa Binh province, marking another important milestone in the project’s accelerated timeline.

After arriving at Hai Phong port from overseas, the transformers were transported via waterways to the Hoa Binh dam. They were then lifted onto multi-axle trailers and moved through the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant tunnel to their installation site. The total transportation time from Hai Phong port to the construction site took over 15 days.

The first transformer arrived at the site on June 22nd, and the second one was successfully transported to its position on the morning of June 24th.

It is expected to take about 40 days for the contractors, Lilama 10, and the electrical testing unit (Electric Testing Company of the North) to complete the installation and adjustment of the transformers. EVNPMB1 will require the contractors to arrange sufficient manpower, work in three shifts with four continuous teams, and coordinate work reasonably to ensure the project schedule.

EVN, EVNPMB1, and relevant units are making every effort and employing all necessary construction measures to meet the deadline for the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project to connect to the grid and generate electricity on August 19, 2025.

With an installed capacity of 480MW and comprising two generating units, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project has a total investment of VND 9,220.83 billion. Once operational, it will contribute nearly 500 million kWh to the national grid annually, promoting the development of green energy and ensuring the country’s energy security. It will also support the socio-economic development of the region.

The project will play a crucial role in meeting the growing electricity demands of the economy, ensuring national energy security, and improving the efficiency of the power system. It is expected to provide significant support for the economy’s development, with a projected two-digit GDP growth rate in the 2026-2030 period. Additionally, the project aligns with Vietnam’s international commitments and contributes to the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as pledged at COP26.
