The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant has produced approximately 230 billion kWh over the past 30 years. After more than a decade of project research, in late January 2021, the expansion project of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant was officially started by the Vietnam Electricity Group, located on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower dam.
On the morning of June 24, two super-heavy transformers, each weighing over 200 tons, were successfully transported to the construction site of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project (Hoa Binh province). This event marks a significant milestone, contributing to accelerating the completion of the project.
The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project has a total investment of over VND 9,200 billion. The goal is to generate electricity from two generators to provide an additional nearly 500 million kWh of electricity to the national grid.
According to the construction site, Mr. Doan Ba Thuc, Deputy Director of the Management Board of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project, said that Project Management Unit No. 1 (EVNPMB1) and related units have just completed the transportation of transformers for installation at the site. These are two Siemens 3-phase 15,75/525±2*2,5%kV, 294MVA transformers, designed for outdoor use.

After being transported from abroad to Hai Phong port, the two transformers continued their journey by waterway to get to Hoa Binh dam. Here, the transformers were lifted onto multi-axle trailers and transported through the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower tunnel to their installation location. The total transportation time for the two transformers from Hai Phong port to the construction site was more than 15 days.
The first transformer was assembled at the site on June 22, and the second one was successfully transported to its position on the morning of June 24.
Lilama 10 Contractor and Northern Power Experiment Company are making efforts to complete the installation and adjustment of the transformers within 40 days. The National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNPMB1) will require contractors to arrange sufficient manpower, work in 3 shifts and 4 continuous teams, and coordinate closely to ensure the project progresses as scheduled.
EVN, EVNPMB1, and related units are making every effort to implement construction measures to meet the progress of connecting the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project to the national grid on August 19, 2025.
Signing a €65 Million Loan Agreement for the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project
The loan agreement signing marks a significant step forward in the implementation of the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project. It also reinforces the enduring and productive partnership between EVN and KfW in the realm of sustainable energy development.
A Triple Threat: POW, PNJ, and DGC – A Bullish Outlook?
The securities companies recommend a positive outlook for POW, anticipating stable operations for its older plants; a favorable outlook for PNJ as its stock price has been discounted to a lower-than-average 3-year P/E ratio; and suggest increasing the weightage of DGC, expecting a recovery in yellow phosphorus prices.
