Phu Quoc International Airport Expansion: A Step Towards a Seamless Travel Experience

Sun Group, a leading investment group, is undertaking an ambitious expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport with a total investment of nearly VND 22,000 billion. The project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027, in time for the APEC Summit, and will introduce a revolutionary “touchless” operation model, a first for any airport in Vietnam.

Passengers at Phu Quoc International Airport will soon be able to breeze through security checks, check-in, boarding, and baggage claim without presenting any documents, thanks to a biometric authentication system. Facial recognition and fingerprint identification will streamline these processes, reducing the time spent at each touchpoint to just 15-20 seconds per person. Renowned consulting firms CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France) are behind the project’s design.

Upon completion, the airport will have the capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers annually. A comprehensive Total Airport Management (TAM) system will be implemented to integrate ground and airside operations, passenger flow management, flight coordination, and security. This cutting-edge system ensures efficient and seamless airport management.

In terms of baggage handling, the airport will utilize the Individual Carrier System (ICS) for outbound baggage, where each piece of luggage is placed in a separate tray, enabling precise tracking and reducing the risk of mishandling. For inbound baggage, a high-capacity inclined conveyor system, equipped with automatic scanning and alert technology for suspicious items, will be employed.

The expansion will increase aircraft parking positions to over 100, including 71 connected directly to passenger boarding bridges. A novel on-site underground fueling system will be introduced, replacing traditional refueling trucks, to reduce emissions, noise, and turn-around time for aircraft.

With over 20 incoming and outgoing baggage islands, the airport will be able to handle more flights during peak hours. The project is of significant importance to Kien Giang province, ensuring the necessary infrastructure for the APEC 2027 summit and long-term tourism development in Phu Quoc.

Sun Group has also received government approval to establish Sun Phu Quoc Airways, with a chartered capital of VND 2,500 billion. Headquartered in Phu Quoc, the airline will focus on domestic and international routes, connecting key tourism destinations. This airline venture is a strategic move by Sun Group to expand its tourism-aviation-infrastructure ecosystem on the island.
