On June 26th, at the People’s Court of Hanoi, lawyers were given the right to interrogate 41 defendants in a case that took place at Phuc Son Group and the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Quang Ngai, and Vinh Long.
In court, Nguyen Van Hau once again acknowledged his awareness of his wrongdoing. “When I was detained, I cooperated with Bureau C03 to resolve many other cases. Thus, I am asking for my contribution to be considered as a mitigating circumstance,” Hau stated.
Regarding the charge of bribery, Hau asserted that he had confessed to the act even before the prosecution. Consequently, the former chairman of Phuc Son requested to be exempted from criminal liability for this offense.
When asked about his charitable activities and contributions to social welfare, Hau became emotional and recounted his humble beginnings. He shared that he was born into a impoverished family, and his sister had to drop out of school so he could continue his education. “For the past 20 years, I have always felt a sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate. Whenever I acquired something of value, I thought about how many houses could be built with that money,” Hau expressed.

Hau revealed that he had constructed over 13,000 houses for those in need, supported over 10,000 Vietnamese heroic mothers and 100,000 orphans, funded surgeries for thousands of eye and heart patients, and provided hundreds of tons of rice to people in the northwestern mountainous region.
In his hometown of Vinh Phuc and his native Long Bien in Hanoi, Hau collaborated with local authorities to build more than 3,000 houses for impoverished families. “During my charitable endeavors, I never allowed the local authorities to publicize or report on my donations. I did not seek recognition or accolades, and I declined all honors and certificates of appreciation,” Hau stated, hoping that the court would consider these acts as mitigating factors.
When questioned by the prosecution, Hau confirmed that if the restrictions on his transactions were lifted, he would sell 196 properties to compensate for the damages caused by the case. The court inquired about the feasibility of this proposal with the representative of Phuc Son Group, who affirmed, “It is entirely feasible to sell the 196 land use rights certificates to settle all the damages within 4-5 days before the court announces the verdict.”
The court approved the proposal and allowed Phuc Son Group to find partners and customers to transfer the 196 land use rights certificates. The proceeds from the sales are to be deposited into a temporarily held account as proof. The representative of the Hanoi People’s Procuracy agreed with the court’s decision, deeming it reasonable, and requested the enterprise to proceed immediately.
