“NAFDAC Seizes Counterfeit and Unregistered Products in Suleja, Niger State”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria has seized counterfeit and unregistered goods worth over 47 million naira (approximately $112,000) in a raid at the Ibrahim Babangida International Market in Suleja, Niger State.
This operation is part of NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of substandard products that pose health risks to the public and contravene import regulations.
According to a statement released by NAFDAC on X (formerly Twitter) on June 18, the agency sealed a warehouse operated by Mr. Alhaji Ahmed, which stored large quantities of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) packed in 25kg bags. MSG, a food additive, is currently banned from large-scale importation into Nigeria due to health and food safety management concerns.
MSG, commonly known by its commercial names such as Ajinomoto or White Maggi, is under strict surveillance due to concerns over its long-term effects on consumers if misused or sourced from unknown origins.
In addition to MSG, NAFDAC discovered counterfeit toothpaste with misleading labels, including imitation versions of popular brands such as Oral-B and Colgate. Unregistered products such as charcoal toothpaste and a “three-in-one” toothpaste named Crogate and Cloguide were also found.
Imported spaghetti, an item prohibited under current regulations, was among the seized goods.
Authorities stated that several shops in the market are under investigation, while the confiscated products will undergo testing, origin verification, and compliance evaluation.
NAFDAC warns consumers to steer clear of products lacking clear labeling, especially food additives and toothpaste. All legitimate products in the Nigerian market must bear a valid NAFDAC number, manufacturing and expiration dates, batch numbers, and the manufacturer’s address to ensure quality and safety standards.
The agency reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding public health through nationwide inspection and enforcement campaigns, continuously working to remove substandard products from the market.
