Thai authorities seize over 172,000 bottles of counterfeit cough syrup in a raid.
Thailand’s Consumer Protection Police Division, along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), raided a counterfeit cough syrup production facility in Ayutthaya Province. During the operation, authorities confiscated over 172,000 bottles of cough syrup, as well as machinery and raw materials, valued at more than 20 million baht (approximately $600,000).Â
The raid was conducted following reports of illegal concoction of cough syrup, allergy medication, and kratom leaf extract to create a addictive beverage known as “4X100”. Raw materials were sourced from various locations, with syrup production taking place in a warehouse in Moo 4, and bottling occurring in another warehouse 500 meters away in Moo 2. Migrant workers were employed, and production sites were frequently changed to evade detection.

Authorities uncovered a large-scale network of counterfeit cough syrup production.
Authorities also discovered that this counterfeit syrup operation was part of a large-scale network, supplying similar groups in Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, and neighboring provinces.Â
The Consumer Protection Police Division had previously raided this network in August 2024 and January 2025, but the perpetrators continued their illicit activities. In response, the police collaborated with the FDA and the Provincial Public Health Office to obtain a search warrant from the court. They seized the counterfeit syrup and production equipment. The authorities are now gathering evidence to prosecute those involved for offenses such as “illegal production and trade of pharmaceuticals” and “drug counterfeiting.”
