On June 30th afternoon, the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Works Construction Investment Management Board (Ho Chi Minh City Transport Board, investor), in coordination with the Department of Construction, People’s Committee of Thu Duc City, and relevant units, held a ceremony to open the HC1-01 tunnel, which is part of the An Phu traffic junction project.

The HC1-01 tunnel is one of the key components of the An Phu traffic junction, which was previously considered a major transportation “bottleneck” in eastern Ho Chi Minh City.

With a total investment of VND 342 billion, the tunnel is 455 meters long, 20 meters wide, and consists of 19 tunnel sections (including 4 enclosed sections that are 80 meters long and 15 open sections that are 375 meters long). It has a cross-section of four lanes, accommodating two-way traffic with two car lanes in each direction.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Board, the opening of the HC1-01 tunnel not only facilitates smoother travel for locals but also enables the reorganization of traffic in the area, providing space for the construction of the N3 and N4 bridge branches. These branches will connect to the Gio Ong To Bridge, a previously completed component of the project.

To facilitate construction, two lanes on the cross-section of Mai Chi Tho Road, adjacent to the tunnel, will be temporarily occupied.

Additionally, the operation of the HC1-01 tunnel contributes to better traffic distribution and regulation in the area, reducing congestion on major arteries such as Mai Chi Tho, Nguyen Thi Dinh, and Luong Dinh Cuah Streets.

The tunnel is equipped with lighting, traffic signs, fire protection systems, pumping stations, and other facilities to ensure safe operation.

Mr. Luong Minh Phuc, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Board, shared that following the completion of the HC1-01 tunnel, the focus will shift to expediting the construction of the HC1-02 tunnel and the N1.1, N1.3, and N2 bridge branches, with the aim of gradually completing the entire An Phu traffic junction project.

“We sincerely appreciate the support and understanding of the local community during the construction period, as this area remained accessible despite the inconveniences. We look forward to continued cooperation from various departments, media organizations, and residents to finalize the remaining components and put the entire An Phu junction into synchronized operation in the near future,” Mr. Phuc added.

The tunnel accommodates four lanes of traffic, with two lanes in each direction.

With the opening of the HC1-01 tunnel, vehicles coming from the Saigon River tunnel and traveling on Mai Chi Tho Street can now directly access the HCMC-Long Thanh Highway without having to stop at the Mai Chi Tho – Dong Van Cong intersection. Photo: Huu Huy

The An Phu traffic junction project has a total investment of over VND 3,400 billion and is considered a key infrastructure project, connecting the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Highway, Mai Chi Tho Street, and the East-West Boulevard. Upon completion, the project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and boost socio-economic development in eastern Ho Chi Minh City.
