At 8 am on June 30, 34 provinces and cities across Vietnam simultaneously held a ceremony to announce the National Assembly and local resolutions and decisions on the merger of administrative units at the provincial and communal levels, the establishment of Party organizations, and the designation of Party Committees, People’s Councils, People’s Committees, and Fatherland Front Committees for the provinces, cities, and special districts.
This historic political event marks a new era of development for Vietnam.
In An Giang province, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh attended the ceremony to announce the National Assembly’s resolutions and decisions on the merger of administrative units at the provincial and communal levels in An Giang.
According to Resolution No. 202/2025/QH15, An Giang province will merge with Kien Giang province to form a new province named An Giang. The new An Giang province borders Ca Mau province, Dong Thap province, Can Tho city, the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Regarding the communal-level administrative units in An Giang, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 1654/NQ-UBTVQH15. As a result of the rearrangement, the province now has 102 communal-level administrative units, including 85 communes, 14 wards, and 3 special districts. Of these, 79 communes, 14 wards, and 3 special districts were formed after the rearrangement, while 6 communes remained unchanged.

He pointed out the unique geographical characteristics of the province, which encompass a diverse range of landscapes, from the sea and islands to mountainous forests and fertile plains. An Giang also boasts an increasingly modernized system of transport, irrigation, power, and water infrastructure, as well as a plentiful local labor force.
Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh emphasized that these factors will endow An Giang with distinctive potential, prominent opportunities, and a competitive edge in developing large-scale marine economy, tourism, agriculture, and aquaculture industries, unmatched across the nation. Additionally, the province is home to promising industrial processing zones and logistics systems.
During the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh also remarked that the streamlining and merger of administrative units not only redefine the administrative boundaries but, more importantly, create new conditions, dynamics, and mechanisms for faster and more sustainable development, with the ultimate goal of better serving the people.
This foundation will enable An Giang to maximize its resources, effectively harness its potential and strengths, and emerge as a significant growth pole in the Mekong Delta region and the country as a whole.
