In a shocking development, Indian authorities arrested businessman Ajay Agrawal, owner of Agarwal Traders, for producing 500 liters of fake milk from just one liter of industrial chemicals. The case has sent shockwaves across the nation as it uncovers a nearly 20-year-old racket of manufacturing synthetic milk and paneer.
A raid conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Agrawal’s shop and four warehouses in Bulandshahr led to the seizure of a large quantity of pre-mixed chemicals, along with artificial flavoring and sweetening agents used to mimic the taste, color, and appearance of real milk.

According to an FSSAI official, Agrawal only needed 5 ml of the chemical solution to produce two liters of fake milk, achieving this deception through the addition of flavorings and sweeteners that tricked the senses of consumers.
At the scene, authorities discovered and confiscated hazardous chemicals, including potassium hydroxide (KOH), whey powder, sorbitol, milk permeate, and refined soy fat. Notably, artificial sweeteners were used in the milk, which had expired two years prior to its seizure.

Among the confiscated chemicals, KOH is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns to the digestive tract, damage to the mucous membranes, and even death if ingested. Additionally, the untraceable sources of whey powder, sorbitol, and artificial fat may lead to digestive issues, liver and kidney problems, and long-term health implications.
Furthermore, authorities suspect that Ajay Agrawa shared his formula with other milk sellers in the village to maximize profits. The FSSAI, in collaboration with the police, is interrogating Agrawal to uncover the origin of the formula and identify his partners in this illicit enterprise. “We are focusing on tracking down those who purchased or distributed the products in the last six months,” stated Vinit Saxena, an FSSAI official.
