The My Thuy Interchange project in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, with a total investment of over VND 3,400 billion, has yet to be completed after almost a decade due to site clearance and compensation issues.

The project, which began in 2016, is a strategic interchange connecting Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, Dong Van Cong Street, and Ring Road 2 (Vo Chi Cong Street). It plays a crucial role in reducing congestion in the Cat Lai Port and Phu My Bridge areas, which have the highest concentration of cargo vehicles in Ho Chi Minh City.

The project consists of two main components: construction with a total capital of VND 1,826 billion and site clearance, compensation, and resettlement of over VND 1,623 billion. The total area requiring clearance is 16.6 hectares, involving 195 households.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Project Management Board (Ho Chi Minh City Transport), site clearance has only reached about 70%. As some households have not yet handed over the land, the construction packages are progressing slowly.

Currently, the project has only reached about 30% completion. Some completed components include the Ky Ha 3 Bridge (left branch), the overpass on Ring Road 2 (left branch), the tunnel turning left from Ring Road 2 to Cat Lai, and the My Thuy 3 Bridge (6 lanes).

However, many critical packages have been halted due to a lack of construction sites. The package for the construction of the branch road on the left bank of My Thuy Canal has only reached 15% and is currently on hold. The package on the right bank of My Thuy Canal has achieved 50% progress but has also stopped due to the unavailability of the next site.

Notably, the Ky Ha 4 Bridge package and the branch from Phu My Bridge to Cat Lai, which started in April 2024, have only completed the bridge foundation and had to halt construction due to the lack of site clearance for the remaining work.

Packages that started in 2025, such as the overpass turning left from Cat Lai to Phu My Bridge (started on January 18), Ky Ha 3 Bridge (right branch), and the overpass on Ring Road 2 (right branch), which started on March 14, are constructing pile foundations and bridge foundations. However, progress is slow due to delays in site clearance.

The Ho Chi Minh City Transport Management Board proposed that the People’s Committee of Thu Duc City urgently complete the handover of the remaining site before May 30, 2025, to ensure the project’s completion by April 30, 2026, as planned.

According to the Thu Duc City authorities, the delay is mainly due to land disputes, boundary overlaps, administrative complaints, or the inability to arrange suitable resettlement land for residents. Thu Duc City is actively resolving these issues and committed to completing compensation and site clearance in the second quarter of 2025.

The My Thuy Interchange project is divided into three phases. Phases 1 and 2 completed many components from 2019 to 2021. Phase 3, with a total construction capital of about VND 312 billion, started in April 2025, and is being implemented concurrently with the remaining compensation work.

The My Thuy Interchange is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s key transport infrastructure projects. Its timely completion will not only relieve traffic pressure at the Cat Lai gateway but also boost the socio-economic development of the city’s eastern region.
