On June 29, the People’s Procuracy of Ia Grai district, Gia Lai province, announced the prosecution of 10 defendants for “Organizing Gambling” and “Gambling”.
At around 2:30 pm on October 1, 2024, the Ia Grai District Police (formerly) raided the house of Than Thi Hoang Thu (born 1978, residing in Jut 2 village, Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district) and caught her red-handed with nine other female offenders gambling in the form of playing Xi Lat.
From the gambling scene, the police seized VND 42 million and related gambling paraphernalia. Notably, the authorities confiscated VND 10.4 million from Nguyen Thi Hang (born 1983), who was, at that time, the Head of Area I Insurance Division at PJICO Gia Lai Insurance Company.
During the police interrogation, the offenders confessed that after a meal, around 12:30 pm on the same day, they conceived the idea of gambling to make money for their personal expenses and entertainment. Thu bought two decks of playing cards and spread out a mat for the group to gamble in a room next to her house. Each person took turns being the dealer, and each bet ranged from VND 50,000 to VND 300,000. After six rounds, the dealer had to pay VND 50,000 as a “fee” to Thu, which was placed in a plastic box under the gambling mat.
The investigation revealed that Thu brought over VND 5.6 million for gambling, while the other offenders brought amounts ranging from VND 2.3 million to VND 7.4 million. Notably, Hang possessed the largest sum, VND 23.7 million, but only used VND 13.3 million for gambling.
It is worth mentioning that defendant Hang has been working as an insurance specialist at PJICO Gia Lai since 2016. In 2022, she was appointed as the Head of Area I Insurance Division, a position she held until the time of this incident.
