On August 4th, VNPT Group inaugurated and commenced operations of the VSTN terrestrial international optical cable route – the first cable route to directly connect Vietnam to Singapore via a fully terrestrial infrastructure. This is also the first international cable route to be fully invested and owned by a Vietnamese enterprise.

Technically and strategically, the VSTN cable route spans approximately 3,900 km across five countries: Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Constructed entirely on land, the cable connects VNPT’s technical center in Danang directly to leading regional data centers such as IDC Telehouse (Thailand), MY01 Cyberjaya, Equinix JH01 Johor Bahru (Malaysia), and Equinix and Global Switch (Singapore).

By controlling the entire route from end to end, VNPT can proactively operate, handle incidents, and enhance international connectivity in the context of frequent and prolonged undersea cable incidents.

The VSTN employs DWDM wavelength-division multiplexing transmission technology, with each wavelength capable of carrying a minimum capacity of 300 Gbps. The total designed capacity of the route reaches 4 Tbps and can be upgraded to 12 Tbps or higher. This cable route offers flexible expansion capabilities, effectively meeting the demands of growing traffic in the near future.

Previously, VNPT operated four international undersea cable routes, including AAG, APG, AAE-1, and SJC-2, along with two telecommunications satellites, Vinasat-1 and Vinasat-2. With the addition of the VSTN, VNPT is gradually completing a multimodal transmission ecosystem – spanning land, sea, and space – to enhance service quality and ensure the security of digital infrastructure.

According to VNPT Chairman To Dung Thai, the VSTN is not just a technical achievement but also aligns with Vietnam’s strategy to modernize its international connectivity infrastructure. Owning this terrestrial cable route improves the stability and reliability of the national telecommunications infrastructure while serving as a crucial backup for the operational undersea cables.
