During the Lunar New Year, while some consumers are willing to spend millions of dong to buy imported candies or expensive handmade cakes, many housewives choose to take matters into their own hands by preparing dried fruits made from seemingly discarded ingredients such as watermelon rind, pomelo rind, orange peel, etc.

Pomelo is a common fruit in our country, and each region has its own characteristic specialty pomelo, so the prices also vary.

Normally, people only eat the segments and pulps of the pomelo, while the rinds are thrown into the trash can. Occasionally, some families use the rinds to make shampoo, or some businesses collect them to make pomelo tea… However, recently, the pomelo rinds have been turned into a delicious and unique candy called pomelo peel candy. Alongside traditional types of candies, pomelo peel candy is favored by many people during the Lunar New Year of 2024.

This candy is crispy and refreshing, with a sweet taste from sugar and a hint of mild sourness blended in every piece of pomelo peel. Pomelo peel has many uses such as healing, weight loss, skin and hair care, so it is favored by many office ladies.

“Pomelo peel candy contains a lot of essential oils, which helps to relieve cough, sore throat, and indigestion. Since I make it myself, I can reduce the amount of sugar to a minimum. It is very delicious and not too sweet. Children also like it and it’s good for their health,” said Ms. Ngoc Linh (Hanoi).

Sellers introduce pomelo peel candy made by freeze-drying technology, which is easy to eat, slightly sour, fragrant, sweet, not astringent, and not cloying when consumed.

On the market, pomelo peel candy is sold at prices ranging from 200,000 to 250,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the type. In addition, there are also pomelo peel candies imported from Thailand, which are sold at prices ranging from 350,000 to 500,000 VND per kilogram. Moreover, on the near Tet occasion, with increased demand, many businesses have imported this type of candy to sell at extremely high prices: 600,000-650,000 VND per kilogram, and they are always in high demand.

Near Tet, many online shops announced being sold out due to a high volume of orders. On cooking forums, in addition to sharing recipes for making coconut candy, carrot candy, sweet potato candy, winter melon candy, recently housewives also shared the tips for making watermelon peel candy, kaffir lime peel candy, orange peel candy, pomelo peel candy.

Most housewives choose to make these candies because they want something new and different to treat their guests during Tet. However, many people also make them to save money because these are all things that used to be discarded but can now be used to make unique candies.
