The CMIT welcomed the arrival of the Margrethe Maersk in 2020. This massive container ship, measuring 399 meters in length and 59 meters in width, has a weight capacity of over 214,000 tons, placing it among the largest of its kind globally.

The Ministry of Transport has granted approval for the Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), operated by Cai Mep International Port Company Limited, to officially receive container ships with a weight capacity of up to 214,121 DWT, provided they are unloaded.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration has been tasked with guiding and overseeing the implementation of subsequent steps by the investor, ensuring compliance with Decree No. 58/2017 of the Government, relevant documents from the Ministry of Transport, and related legal provisions.

Additionally, they are responsible for approving a plan to ensure maritime safety for fully-loaded container ships entering and departing from CMIT. The Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority will be directed to permit only unloaded container ships with a weight capacity of up to 214,121 DWT to enter and exit the port, prioritizing maritime safety, security, and environmental protection.

Ensuring Suitable Conditions for Existing Maritime Channels

The CMIT container port will be allowed to receive unloaded vessels with a weight capacity of up to 214,121 DWT, provided that suitable conditions are met regarding existing maritime channels, natural conditions, operational requirements, and other relevant factors. This ensures the safety of structures, maritime and navigational security, fire and explosion prevention, and environmental protection.

Cai Mep International Port Company Limited is obligated to adhere to directives from the Department of Investment Management and follow the guidance of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority, and other relevant agencies during the process of receiving vessels at the port.

The investor is also accountable for investment efficiency and any incidents that may occur during the vessel reception process. They will not request the Ministry of Transport to invest in or upgrade public maritime infrastructure related to this policy.

Strategically located at Cai Mep berth in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, CMIT boasts a minimum water depth of -16.5 meters alongside its 600-meter-long quay and spans an area of 48 hectares. With a capacity of over 1.1 million TEU, the port is equipped with six Super Post-Panamax cranes (22+1 container rows), empty container handling equipment, heavy container handling equipment, specialized semi-trailers, and 15 RTG cranes.

Since 2020, the Ministry of Transport has permitted CMIT to experiment with receiving container ships with a weight capacity of up to 214,121 DWT. The Vietnam Maritime Administration has approved a plan to ensure the safe departure of unloaded container ships with a weight capacity of 214,121 DWT from CMIT on the Cai Mep – Thi Vai river.
