In 2024, the US and Vietnam successfully negotiated the import of cherry and plum varieties into Vietnam. Building on this success, agricultural agencies from both countries are now working tirelessly to introduce more American specialty fruits to the Vietnamese market.

On September 9, MM Mega Market Vietnam, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), launched the “United Tastes – Discover American Delights” program at MM Mega Marker An Phu, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City.

In a sideline exchange at the event, Ms. Alexis M. Taylor, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs of the USDA, shared that the agricultural collaboration between the United States and Vietnam has been robust. Vietnam is the 10th largest market for US agricultural exports, while the US is the 3rd largest market for Vietnamese agricultural exports.

In 2023, the US exported $3.1 billion worth of agricultural products to Vietnam, becoming the third-largest exporter of commodities such as cotton, soybeans, grains, seeds, wheat, poultry, dairy products, as well as fresh fruits like apples, grapes, and cherries.

Also, in 2023, Vietnam and the US signed agreements to export Vietnamese green-skinned pomelos to the US and import American golden pomelos to Vietnam.

“There is a great deal of complementary food produce between our two countries. Especially, many Vietnamese fruits are unavailable in the US. Meanwhile, American livestock, poultry, and cotton products have great potential in the Vietnamese market. There is still a lot of untapped market potential that we can explore further,” said Ms. Alexis M. Taylor.

Currently, Vietnam has officially exported eight types of fruit to the US, including grapefruit, mango, dragon fruit, longan, jackfruit, lychee, rambutan, and breast milk fruit. In return, Vietnam has opened its market to American fruits such as apples, grapes, oranges, cherries, pears, blueberries, peaches, and nectarine. Three types of fruits, including mandarins, yellow lemons, and plums, are in the negotiation process and are expected to be officially exported to Vietnam in the near future.

Regarding the recent export of American peaches and nectarine to Vietnam, Ms. Caroline Stringer, Commercial Director of the California Fresh Fruit Association, shared that peach and nectarine growers in California have invested in exclusive varieties unique to the region, giving them a competitive edge.

“Vietnamese people consume more fruit than Americans. We are delighted that Vietnamese consumers appreciate the sweetness and high quality of fruits from California,” said Ms. Caroline Stringer.

This is the third year that MM Mega Market has collaborated with the USDA to organize the “Discover American Delights” event. Throughout this program, customers nationwide will have the opportunity to purchase fresh and delicious products with special discounts of up to 30%, including Tyson chicken, premium beef, characteristic fruits such as Envy, Jazz, and Fuji apples, grapes, cherries, oranges, and a variety of dry foods such as sauces, chocolates, wheat, nuts, and beverages like wine and juice. The event will also feature special promotions, food tasting, and cooking demonstrations every weekend.
