The successful export of longan and mangoes from Can Tho to the US and Australian markets by air marks a turning point for the city’s fruit industry. Linking to form raw material areas, building plantation codes, and packing facilities are among the city’s top priorities to enhance the value of its fruit industry.
According to the Can Tho City Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the city has over 25,000 hectares of fruit trees, yielding approximately 200,000 tons annually. Many economically valuable fruits, such as mango, breast milk fruit, longan, durian, mangosteen, and strawberry, have been exported to various markets.
Can Tho has 199 plantation codes for export purposes
Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, Director of the City Plant Protection and Cultivation Department, stated that, per regulations, regions intending to export fresh fruit to international markets must obtain plantation codes and packing facility codes. Therefore, the Cultivation Department has been guiding locals in implementing plantation codes for concentrated farming areas.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, Can Tho has granted 199 plantation codes, encompassing over 2,700 hectares of various crops. Additionally, during the process of implementing plantation codes, the functional agencies in Can Tho provide instructions on procedures, techniques, and training on quarantine and food safety requirements for importers. This ensures that farmers produce according to market demands and meet export standards.
Planned concentrated fruit-growing area
“In the future, with the expected growth in fruit exports, the Ministry of Agriculture has been working on several protocols, including those for durian, coconut, and passion fruit. They are opening up many markets for various crops, which is excellent news for farmers. A new direction is emerging, requiring farmers to follow the prescribed procedures, techniques, and market requirements. If we do this, our export prospects will undoubtedly improve,” said Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu.
The Mekong Delta accounts for a significant proportion of Vietnam’s fruit exports, with approximately 370,000 hectares of fruit trees in the region. Many economically valuable fruits are grown here, and the localities have planned concentrated specialized fruit-growing areas to serve export markets such as China, the US, Australia, the EU, Japan, South Korea, and other countries.
To enhance the value of the fruit industry, Mekong Delta localities have planned concentrated specialized fruit-growing areas for key crops such as mango, durian, breast milk fruit, jackfruit, longan, grapefruit, passion fruit, and other fruits. The region has made significant contributions to Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit export turnover of over $4.6 billion in the first eight months of the year and is focusing on developing sustainable strategies for the fruit industry.
