At its latest electric vehicle battery launch in Germany, alongside introducing the Tectrans-B (Bus Edition) battery for electric buses, battery giant CATL unveiled a massive 600 kWh battery for heavy-duty trucks.
The CATL Tectrans-T is a battery designed specifically for heavy-duty trucks, offering an impressive 2.8 million km lifespan. This battery can be charged up to 70% in just 15 minutes, and the highest-end version boasts a capacity of 600 kWh, the company revealed at IAA Mobility in Germany on September 16.
The T-series will be available in two versions: the Long Life Edition and the Superfast Charging Edition.
The Tectrans-T Long Life Edition features an ultra-long lifespan of 2.8 million km and 15 years. According to CATL, the maximum range is 500 km, and it supports CATL’s battery swapping solution, further reducing depreciation costs. The battery swaps are facilitated by QIJI Energy, a subsidiary in charge of developing a battery-swapping network in China, tailored for heavy-duty trucks.
Aleksej Krükov, Chief Engineer of CATL Oversea Business, stated during the IAA presentation in Hanover: “This product sets a new standard for the durability of heavy-duty truck batteries.”
The Tectrans-T Superfast Charging Edition supports 4C charging and can recharge up to 70% in 15 minutes. The battery capacity ranges from 200 to 600 kWh, with a maximum range of 500 km. However, the expected lifespan is lower than the Long Life Edition, at 1.2 million km and 8 years.
In Europe, CATL has partnered with leading heavy-duty truck manufacturers such as Daimler Truck AG, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and Volvo A/B.
Tectrans, previously known as Tianxing (天行 in Chinese), is CATL’s new commercial vehicle battery brand, launched in July, and currently offers three flagship products:
Tectrans-T for heavy-duty electric trucks.
Tectrans-L (L-Series) for light-duty commercial electric vehicles.
Tectrans-B (Bus Edition) for electric buses.
The Tectrans L (L-Series), introduced on July 4, provides a battery capacity ranging from 30 to 200 kWh, a realistic range of 150 to 500 km, and a maximum charging speed of 4C, offering an 8-year or 800,000 km lifespan.
The Tectrans B, also known as Tectran Bus Edition, was launched the week before in an online event in China. CATL claims a battery energy density of 175 Wh/kg, a 15-year lifespan, and a range of 1.5 million km (930,000 miles). The Tectran-B will be warranted for 10 years or 1 million km (620,000 miles).
CATL plans to deploy the new Tianxing-B battery on 80 different bus models and has established partnerships with 13 customers, including Dongfeng, Golden Dragon, and Yutong Bus in China.
All three Tectrans batteries are based on the company’s 3.0 CTP (cell-to-pack) technology.
