Black Myth: Wukong has broken a slew of records, with an estimated 20 million copies sold in its first month. The anticipated revenue for Black Myth: Wukong is also massive, projected to reach $1 billion thanks to 35 million in sales. However, the investment in this “AAA blockbuster” is also not small.
According to Game Science founder Feng Ji, “Black Myth: Wukong” has consumed a total of $400 million over six years, and of course, only a young studio like Game Science couldn’t make it happen. Previously, Liu Wei of Hero Games was revealed as the first investor in the production of Black Myth: Wukong. However, Tencent is the real “giant” that made Black Myth: Wukong a success. The company provided financial support, manpower, and its top experts to help Game Science complete its masterpiece.
In a recent surprising turn of events, Tencent’s co-founder has reclaimed the title of China’s richest person. Specifically, Pony Ma surpassed prominent Chinese billionaires, including ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) founder Zhang Yiming. Ma’s wealth surged as Tencent’s stock value rapidly increased, reaching a staggering $43.9 billion according to Bloomberg.
Tencent’s stock surge is attributed to the revival of China’s gaming industry after hitting rock bottom in August 2022. However, the $43.9 billion figure still marks a 40% decrease from Ma’s peak wealth in January 2021.
Pony Ma, a computer science graduate from Shenzhen University, worked as a software engineer before co-founding Tencent with four others. Ma established Tencent in 1998 with $70,450 he earned from a previous project. Up to now, Ma’s wealth mainly comes from his substantial Tencent stock holdings.
Tencent is the world’s largest game publisher and was once among the top five companies globally by market capitalization. Its messaging app, WeChat, boasts over a billion users. Additionally, Tencent holds stakes in numerous companies, including Tesla, Reddit, Snap, Spotify, and global entertainment brands.
