With the aim of creating new connections for the western area, the Dam Nha Mac Interchange in Quang Yen Town was invested in by Quang Ninh Province with construction starting in September 2020. This is the largest interchange in the area, with a total investment of over VND 760 billion from the provincial budget.
Covering an area of 83.4 hectares, the Dam Nha Mac Interchange is five times larger than the My Dinh National Stadium (17.5 hectares).
The project serves as a connection point between the road along the river running through the western area (Quang Yen – Dong Trieu) and the Ha Long – Hai Phong Expressway at Km20+050, with a length of 1.57 km along the expressway.
The interchange is designed as a fully-grade separated, cloverleaf interchange with eight ramps and a total length of over 8 km. Of these, the ramps connecting to the river road (ramps 5.1 and 5.2) are designed with eight lanes in the completed phase, with a road width of 46.5 m. The remaining ramps are designed with two lanes each, having a width of 11.75 m, along with the improvement of the tunnel.
In addition, the project includes items such as expanding the foundation and surface of the Ha Long – Hai Phong Expressway to create separate lanes with a width of 8.25 m, as well as improving the tunnel…
Initially, the project was expected to be completed by July 2022. However, the construction faced several challenges, including a 16-month delay in converting forest land, scarcity of filling materials, and adjustments in design levels. As a result, the completion date for the Dam Nha Mac Interchange had to be extended.
According to the Quang Ninh Provincial Portal, the project was restarted in June 2024 after overcoming a series of difficulties.
Currently, the project has completed nearly 80% of the total volume of items. The investor and contractors are determined to complete the project by the end of 2024.
Up to now, the basic construction of the roads has been completed, and the grading of crushed stone is being carried out. The expansion of the tunnel through the Ha Long – Hai Phong Expressway has also been finished.
In addition, the positions of the ramps connecting to the Ha Long – Hai Phong Expressway have been asphalted and basically completed.
Once finished, the Dam Nha Mac Interchange, along with the river road, is expected to create a new transportation corridor. The project aims to connect economic zones, industrial parks, and cities in the western area.
The western economic corridor is identified as the center of economic shift for high-tech industries and is expected to be a new growth pole for the province and Thuy Nguyen District (Hai Phong City) – a district in the process of becoming a city by 2025 according to the planning of Hai Phong City.
