On December 24, the People’s Committee of Ninh Thuan province held a press conference on the socio-economic situation in 2024.

At the press conference, the Ninh Thuan Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department announced that over 90% of residents in the areas planned for the construction of the Ninh Thuan 1 and 2 nuclear power plants agreed with the project.

90% of residents in the project area agreed to the deployment of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant project.

Specifically, the Ninh Thuan Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department distributed 1,000 questionnaires to gather opinions from people in the areas planned for the construction of the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant (in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district) and Ninh Thuan 2 (in Vinh Hai commune, Ninh Hai district). The results showed that 92% of respondents were aware of the nuclear power plant projects, with 90% expressing agreement to their implementation. Only 0.32% disagreed, while the rest had no opinion.

Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi, Deputy Head of the Ninh Thuan Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, stated: “The residents in the project area also hope for a clear construction timeline, the selection of highly capable contractors to ensure safety, and adequate support policies for the local people.”

Among the few residents who disagreed with the construction of the nuclear power plants, some expressed concerns about the risks and safety aspects once the projects become operational. Additionally, they proposed that the central government implement special policies to create sustainable livelihoods for the local people, improving their quality of life.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Quoc Nam, Chairman of the Ninh Thuan People’s Committee, provided additional information: “The Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Plant projects were approved by the National Assembly in 2009, with planned construction sites in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district, and Vinh Hai commune, Ninh Hai district, respectively. The total planned area for the two plants is 1,642.22 hectares. However, on November 26, 2016, the National Assembly decided to halt the implementation of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.”

At the recent 8th session, the National Assembly agreed to continue with the investment policy for the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project as proposed in the Government’s Report No. 811/TTr-CP. The restart of the nuclear power project demonstrates the attention given by the Politburo and the National Assembly to ensuring the country’s energy security.
