Environmental Concerns Raised by Local Residents

There have been concerns from the local community that the proposed land reclamation project in Da Nang, Vietnam, may negatively impact the natural landscape if it proceeds with plans to construct five artificial islands in the bay. As a result, residents have suggested a more conservative approach, proposing a partial land reclamation that creates a new tourism symbol, the “Love Bay,” within the existing bay area.

Additionally, residents recommend that any land reclamation in the Han River to Thanh Khe area should consider the water quality, as it is currently affected by the nearby river, making natural beach tourism development challenging. However, they suggest that this area could be suitable for the development of an international financial and commercial center, along with artificial beaches.

In contrast, the beach area from Lien Chieu to Nam O and Hai Van Ward is proposed to be preserved due to its clearer waters and beautiful beaches. This area has the potential for eco-tourism development, incorporating the Cu De River, Hai Van Pass, and Hon Son Cha. By conserving this naturally stunning area, the city can ensure its availability for future expansion when Da Nang’s tourism industry reaches saturation, allowing for further investment, symbolization, and attraction of more tourists.

Maximizing Nature’s Preservation

In response to these concerns, the Da Nang Department of Construction has stated that they are currently working with various departments and sectors to develop a pilot project with special mechanisms and policies for the national dynamic coastal urban development in the city. This project will be presented to central authorities for approval.

The development of this project involves rigorous research into natural conditions, economic, social, technical, and environmental factors, with a particular focus on environmental challenges, natural landscapes, and marine ecosystems. During the process of formulating the proposal and subsequent procedures, relevant departments are conducting thorough studies on geological, topographical, hydrological, and hydraulic factors. They are also comprehensively assessing environmental, scenic, and ecological impacts to ensure sustainable and harmonious development that minimizes any adverse effects on nature.

The Department of Construction has expressed its receptivity to the ideas and contributions from local residents regarding land reclamation in the Da Nang Bay area. They will forward these suggestions to the relevant authorities during the proposal development and related procedures, ensuring that sustainable development orientations are considered.

Proposed Land Reclamation for Five Artificial Islands

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, the Da Nang Party Committee Secretary, has shared that the city is exploring a large and unique project that involves constructing five floating islands in the Da Nang Bay. This project is expected to create approximately 48 kilometers of new coastline along these islands.

“This is a massive and distinctive project, and the city is directing a meticulous study with special plans and investment approaches to develop a model similar to that of Dubai,” said Mr. Quang.

Recently, the Da Nang People’s Committee established a working group to research the idea of land reclamation in the Da Nang Bay. This group is led by the city’s chairman, with the vice chairman as deputy and directors from various departments as members.
