According to Dân trí, the leadership of Ninh Binh People’s Committee shared that, following the Prime Minister’s instructions, the province is expediting the formulation of a proposal for the “Study on the Feasibility of Establishing Ninh Binh International Airport.”
Once the proposal is finalized, the province will submit it to the Ministry of Construction for consideration and subsequent reporting to the Prime Minister for inclusion in the Master Plan for the Development of the National Airport and Airfield System for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050.
The leader further elaborated that the previously suggested location of Liêm Tuyền ward for the airport construction was merely preliminary. Ninh Binh province proposed this site due to its relatively advantageous position in terms of proximity to significant transportation hubs in the region.
Prior to suggesting Liêm Tuyền ward as the potential site, Ninh Binh province invited aviation management and experts to survey and assess all relevant factors for planning an international airport in the area. Initial survey results indicate that the proposed site is approximately 80 km from Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi), 85 km from Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong), 63 km from Gia Binh Airport, and 85 km from Tho Xuan Airport (Thanh Hoa), conforming to the general plan.
Additionally, the site is conveniently located near high-speed North-South railway stations: about 5 km from Phu Ly station, 43 km from Ninh Binh station, and 17 km from Nam Dinh station. It is also within a reasonable distance from the old city centers of Phu Ly (now Phu Ly ward), Hoa Lu (approximately 30 km), and Nam Dinh (about 22 km), making regional travel more accessible.
The leader of Ninh Binh People’s Committee emphasized that the decision to locate the airport in Liêm Tuyền ward requires thorough consideration and evaluation of multiple factors. Therefore, the province is engaging reputable domestic consulting firms and collaborating with world-renowned aviation consulting experts to conduct surveys and develop a compelling proposal before making any final decisions.
According to the leader, planning and constructing an international airport involves numerous factors and is more complex than planning road transport hubs or waterway ports. Aside from convenient access to transportation networks, an international airport’s location must adhere to the national airport system plan, take into account wind direction and fog-free conditions, and avoid conflicting with the flight paths of other airports.
Ninh Binh province’s stance is to avoid locating the airport too close to administrative and urban centers to prevent hindering urban development. Instead, the province intends to allocate that space for urban and service development, particularly aiming to establish an international tourism hub.
Meanwhile, about 40 km from Noi Bai International Airport, the Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh province has been included in the master plan. On August 19, Bac Ninh province is expected to host a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gia Binh International Airport project, a key national project and a symbol of APEC 2027 hospitality.
With a total area of approximately 1,960 hectares, the Gia Binh International Airport, as per the Ministry of Construction’s approved adjusted master plan, will be larger than Noi Bai (1,500 hectares) and Tan Son Nhat (also around 1,500 hectares), second only to Long Thanh (5,000 hectares).
