On August 9, the Investigation Police Agency of Ca Mau Province announced the prosecution and arrest of Tran My Tien (born 1984, resides in Tri Phai, Ca Mau) for “Fraudulent Appropriation of Assets.”

According to initial investigations, since 2005, Tien has been organizing and inviting people from Tri Phai to join her “hui,” a traditional Vietnamese form of savings club, offering them financial incentives.
However, by February 2023, Tien found herself in a financial crunch but continued her role as the “hui” master. Taking advantage of the members’ absence during the drawing of lots for the “hui,” Tien deceitfully drew lots on their behalf for nine “hui” groups with 103 members, appropriating over VND 8 billion.
The Investigation Police Agency and the People’s Procuracy of Ca Mau Province executed a search warrant at Tien’s residence, seizing documents related to the case.
