A Modern Airport for the Island City of Phu Quoc

In a recent development, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province, in collaboration with the Vietnam Aviation Authority, hosted a conference to announce the master plan for Phu Quoc International Airport.

This airport serves as a vital gateway, connecting Vietnam to the region and the world. It plays a strategic and significant role in the socio-economic development of Kien Giang province and the Mekong Delta region.

During the conference, Decision No. 427/QD-BXD dated April 15, 2025, issued by the Minister of Construction, was announced. This decision approves the master plan for Phu Quoc International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050.

The airport is designated for joint civilian and military use, and the land requirement for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050, is approximately 1,050.1 hectares.

For the period 2021-2030, the planning aim is for Phu Quoc International Airport to attain a 4E airport standard (as per the International Civil Aviation Organization – ICAO code), with a capacity to handle around 10 million passengers and 25,000 tons of cargo annually. The types of aircraft to be operated include Boeing B747, B787, and Airbus A350, or their equivalents.

By 2050, the airport is envisioned to retain its 4E airport status (as per ICAO code) while increasing its capacity to approximately 18 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo per year.

Regarding the runway system, the plan for 2021-2030 involves extending the existing runway in both directions to reach dimensions of 3,500 m x 45 m. Additionally, a second runway with dimensions of 3,300 m x 45 m is proposed, positioned approximately 360 m north of the existing runway, with shoulder dimensions as per regulations.

Looking towards 2050: the configuration of the runways remains unchanged from the previous phase.

The highlight of Phu Quoc International Airport is its passenger terminal, designed with the concept of a phoenix spreading its wings, symbolizing national prestige and pride.

For the period 2021-2030, the plan includes parking spaces in front of the T2 passenger terminal and the expansion of the existing parking area to accommodate approximately 30 aircraft parking positions, with potential for further expansion in the reserved development area. A parking area for VIP/general aviation aircraft is also planned to ensure synchronized operation.

By 2050, the parking area is envisioned to be expanded to accommodate around 45 aircraft parking positions, with reserved space for future expansion if needed.

In anticipation of APEC 2027, Phu Quoc International Airport will undergo construction of a new T2 terminal, designed to be one of the most modern in the world.

The T2 terminal will be built to international standards, featuring separate areas for international and domestic operations, along with a commercial and exhibition center. The terminal will incorporate advanced operational technologies such as an automated baggage handling system and biometric identification through VNeID.

Additionally, a VIP terminal will be constructed in the southwestern part of the airport to serve state leaders and high-level delegations. Following APEC 2027, this facility will be converted for international or general aviation use.

In preparation for APEC 2027, Phu Quoc Airport is set to undergo expansion to achieve a capacity of 18 million passengers per year, a four-and-a-half fold increase from its current capacity of 4 million passengers.

Vietnam’s First Island City

According to the Resolution, as of January 1, 2021, Phu Quoc officially became a city, encompassing the entire natural area and a population of 179,480 people of Phu Quoc District (Kien Giang). It is Vietnam’s first island city, bordering Ha Tien city, Kien Luong district, and sharing borders with Cambodia and Thailand.

Phu Quoc city has been chosen as the host for the APEC 2027 Summit. The timely expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport will not only contribute to the successful organization of APEC 2027 but also propel Phu Quoc towards becoming a leading tourism and economic hub in the region and globally. A series of key infrastructure projects are currently underway in preparation for the APEC 2027 Summit, with a total investment of over VND 300,000 billion.
