The signing and adoption of these strategic documents mark a historic milestone, ushering in a new era of ASEAN’s regional integration journey over the next two decades. It underscores the commitment and determination of its members towards a resilient, dynamic, innovative, and people-centered ASEAN.
In his speech at the signing ceremony, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Chair of ASEAN for 2025, reiterated the founding members’ commitment nearly six decades ago to promote friendship, solidarity, and cooperation, ensuring peace, freedom, and prosperity for the people and future generations.
“Today’s signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration is a reenactment of that sacred promise, not only as a tribute to the past but also as a living covenant with the future. The best way to predict the future is to create it, and that is what ASEAN has strived to do over the decades with perseverance, cooperation, and strategic vision,” Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.
The formulation of the ASEAN Community’s Vision 2045 began five years ago, stemming from Vietnam’s initiative during its 2020 ASEAN Chairmanship on the direction of ASEAN’s development post-2025, paving the way for a confident new phase of development.
Over the years, all ASEAN organs, with a comprehensive and community-wide approach, conducted extensive consultations to understand and heed the aspirations and desires of all segments and groups in the region. This ensures that the new strategic framework meets the practical expectations and interests of the people.

The adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, along with four strategies on political-security, economic, socio-cultural affairs, and connectivity, demonstrates ASEAN’s proactive approach. It not only adapts to a changing world but also strives to lead with unity, resilience, and a shared vision.
The 2045 strategic documents build on past achievements, uphold ASEAN’s core values, and open up numerous opportunities and potentials for intra- and extra-regional cooperation. They enhance ASEAN’s role, prestige, and position both regionally and internationally.

On May 27, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will continue to participate in the activities of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related summits, including the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

The negotiations on tariffs with the US are ongoing, and Asian countries, particularly the ASEAN region, are in a hurry to conclude them. As a highly trade-dependent region, ASEAN has much at stake when it comes to US tariff policies. However, resilience lies not in the trade deficit figures but in the intrinsic structure and strategic response capabilities of the region.
