On May 30, 2025, Hai Duong province hosted the events “Hai Duong in Lychee Season 2025” and “Opening of Thanh Ha Lychee Garden,” officially kicking off the 2025 lychee harvest season. These events are a key part of a trade promotion campaign to promote the lychee brand, enhance its value, and expand the market for this specialty fruit – one of the province’s eight key agricultural products.

The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnamese Trade Counselors abroad, and numerous domestic and foreign businesses and traders.

HAI DUONG’S LYCHEE PRODUCTION IS ESTIMATED AT 60,000 TONS

Mr. Tran Van Quan, Vice Chairman of the Hai Duong People’s Committee, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Manh, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department, Mr. Hoang Minh Chien, Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Department, and leaders of Thanh Ha district jointly cut the ribbon to open the garden, marking the official harvest season for lychees in 2025.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tran Van Quan, Vice Chairman of the Hai Duong People’s Committee, emphasized: “We consider the success of businesses and traders as our own success.” He also committed that the Hai Duong provincial government would create the most favorable conditions in terms of administrative procedures, security, transportation, and support for product consumption to help Thanh Ha lychees reach not only the domestic market but also conquer international markets.

Mr. Quan informed that in 2025, the total lychee-growing area in Hai Duong province reached approximately 8,800 hectares, with an estimated production of 60,000 tons. Thanh Ha district, known as the “capital” of lychees, accounts for 3,300 hectares, with an estimated yield of 40,000 tons. The early lychee crop is expected to yield 28,000 tons, harvested from around May 20 to June 10, while the main crop is expected to yield 32,000 tons, harvested from June 10 to the end of June. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, the quality of lychees this year is highly rated, with attractive appearance, sweet taste, and guaranteed food safety standards.

“Currently, Hai Duong province has 68 lychee-growing areas certified with VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, covering a total area of 721 hectares. The province has been granted 198 codes for growing areas serving export purposes, including 66 codes for China, 38 for Japan, 41 for the US, 45 for Australia, and 8 for Thailand. In addition, there are 16 packing facilities that meet standards with a processing capacity of up to 650 tons/day, ready to serve export orders.”

At the event, the People’s Committee of Thanh Ha district coordinated with businesses to organize a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the export of the first lychee batch of 2025. Specifically, Amei Vietnam Joint Stock Company exported lychees to Japan, Red Dragon Production – Trading – Service Co., Ltd. exported to Australia, and Fusa Organic Agriculture Joint Stock Company exported to Europe.

As part of the garden opening ceremony, Hai Duong province also held a conference to promote the consumption of Thanh Ha lychees in 2025. The conference was connected online with five branches of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, Japan, Singapore, the Czech Republic, and other potential markets. It was also linked to 26 domestic branches and dozens of business branches.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Tran Van Hao, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Duong province, emphasized the role of trade promotion activities in expanding the market and enhancing the value of agricultural products. He also informed that the province produces about 750,000 tons of rice, 900,000 tons of vegetables, 300,000 tons of fruit, and about 200,000 tons of meat, poultry, and seafood annually. Among these, Thanh Ha lychees are identified as a key product with high export value and are gradually expanding into premium markets such as the US, EU, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and the UAE.

TRADE COUNSELORS ACCOMPANYING LYCHEES TO THE WORLD

At the San Francisco branch (USA), Mr. Tong Ba Luan, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office, affirmed his continued support for Hai Duong in promoting agricultural exports, especially lychees. “The US market has strict requirements for plant quarantine and packaging standards, but it has a huge consumption potential. Businesses need to continue improving quality and production processes to meet these standards,” Mr. Luan noted.

Some Vietnamese Trade Counselors abroad also pointed out that the price of Thanh Ha lychees in the international market is still quite high, ranging from 600,000 to 700,000 VND/kg, which is a certain barrier to large-scale consumption. Therefore, adjusting the pricing strategy, increasing the value of processed products, and providing transportation support will be important directions in the future.

According to Mr. Hao, in addition to focusing on the export market, Hai Duong province also pays attention to promoting domestic consumption. The Department of Industry and Trade has worked with retail corporations, wholesale markets, and e-commerce platforms to bring Thanh Ha lychees to large supermarkets in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and other key provinces and cities. This is considered a strategic direction to maintain the domestic market and create a solid foundation for sustainable agricultural product consumption.

In addition, Hai Duong has effectively exploited the model of agricultural tourism associated with the lychee season. During the event on May 30, many locals and tourists experienced picking lychees in the garden, visited processing facilities for lychee-based products such as juice, jam, and dried lychees, and promoted the products through digital platforms, press, and television.

Vice Chairman Tran Van Quan called on domestic and foreign media agencies to accompany the province in its communication efforts to raise the brand awareness of “Thanh Ha lychees” not only as a high-quality agricultural product but also as a symbol of the creative and resilient spirit of the people of Hai Duong.

Thanh Ha lychees have been cultivated for over 170 years in Thuy Lam village, Thanh Son commune, considered the cradle of lychees in the East region. Through generations of preservation and development, lychees are not only a famous specialty but also play an important role in the agricultural production structure of Hai Duong province, accounting for about 10% of the value of the crop production sector.

With the goal of improving productivity, quality, and economic value, the province has been promoting the application of high technology, advanced cultivation techniques, specialized commodity production, staggered harvesting, and chain linkage. At the same time, Hai Duong continues to coordinate with central ministries and sectors to organize national trade promotion events, making lychees a national brand and bringing them to the global market.
