Despite the scorching heat, dedicated teams of construction workers are hard at work at the Deo Ngang Tunnel construction site, connecting Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces. They are determined to complete the project by the end of 2025.

This project is part of the expansion and upgrade of several bridges and tunnels along National Highway 1, with a total investment of nearly VND 2,000 billion. Specifically, the Deo Ngang Tunnel and its 2-kilometer access road have a construction value of over VND 340 billion. The project starts in Ky Nam Ward, Ky Anh Town, Ha Tinh Province, and ends in Quang Dong Commune, Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province.

According to the design, the new tunnel will be 555 meters long and 10.5 meters wide, and is expected to be completed by 2025. Upon completion, Deo Ngang Tunnel will operate with two parallel tunnels, providing a total road width of 20.5 meters and accommodating four vehicle lanes and two bike lanes.

The construction of the tunnel has progressed over 150 meters on the north side in Ky Anh, Ha Tinh Province, and about 50 meters on the south side in Quang Binh Province. The construction process is facilitated by drilling rigs, tunnel-boring robots, and concrete pumping.

“Working in the tunnel is less affected by the weather, but the dusty and confined environment means we have to wear thick protective gear, including helmets and masks,” shared Mr. Cuong, a worker from Thanh Hoa Province. In the photo, workers, engineers, and state-of-the-art machinery and robots work tirelessly day and night.

Engineer Lam Van Truong, Construction Team Leader and Technician at Song Da 10 JSC, shared that they have mobilized their workforce and machinery, working in three shifts and four teams around the clock, with the goal of breaking through the tunnel by mid-July. During the tunnel drilling process, large pipes will be installed to reduce dust, minimize noise, and improve ventilation for the construction workers, especially after blasting rocks with explosives.

With the hot and dry weather in Ha Tinh, the construction workers are enduring challenging conditions but remain committed to their task.

According to the Railway Project Management Board (the project investor), the Deo Ngang Tunnel has a complex geological structure, and the harsh weather conditions have posed significant challenges to the construction process. However, the investor continues to urge the contractor to adhere to the planned schedule and progress.

Currently, the tunnel’s southern section in Quang Binh Province is facing land clearance issues, which need to be resolved soon to ensure the project’s timely completion.

In addition to the mountain tunnel construction, the project team is also working simultaneously on the access road to the tunnel.

The current Deo Ngang Tunnel is 495 meters long, with an access road of nearly 2.2 kilometers. The main tunnel is 11.5 meters wide and 7.5 meters high, and has been in operation for 20 years, with a maximum allowed speed of 50 km/h.

Once completed, the project is expected to meet the increasing traffic demands along National Highway 1 in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces.
