This is an important preparatory step for calibration flights and the evaluation of the 05R/23L runway.

Configuration of the 25L/R runway at Tan Son Nhat and the 23L/R runway at Long Thanh Airport
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, this completion is a result of the urgent, serious work and close coordination between units such as the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) and the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), with the participation of military agencies and related units.
Long Thanh is the largest aviation infrastructure project in the country and a key national project with strategic significance in enhancing transportation capacity and promoting economic development. Therefore, the design of the airspace and the air navigation system for this airport has always been prioritized, with all resources focused on ensuring quality and progress.
Specifically, Long Thanh Airport has a total of 68 air navigation procedures, including 27 departure procedures (SID), 33 arrival procedures (STAR), and 8 approach procedures (IAP). Meanwhile, Tan Son Nhat International Airport has 107 air navigation procedures, comprising 73 SIDs, 27 STARs, and 7 IAPs.
The entire air navigation system is designed to comply with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and employs modern navigation technologies such as RNP 1 (GNSS), RNP APCH, ILS combined with RNP 1, and VOR/DME.
This not only enhances flight efficiency and safety, enabling safe landings in poor weather conditions, but also reduces fuel consumption and flight time while optimizing flight paths and increasing air traffic flow.
Notably, the air navigation system at Tan Son Nhat maintains the existing Point Merge procedure, while Long Thanh adopts a Trombone-style STAR design, ensuring stability and effectively managing traffic flow between the two major southern airports.
The completion of the design and establishment of air navigation procedures for Long Thanh is a crucial step toward the airport’s calibration flight phase and its goal of commencing commercial operations as per the set plan.
