Under the action plan “For a Green Can Gio,” Ho Chi Minh City aims to develop Can Gio into a coastal area characterized by a green, smart, and environmentally-friendly urban growth center. The vision is to transform Can Gio into a model for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, nature preservation, and a world biosphere reserve, while also mitigating the impacts of climate change and urbanization.

By 2025, Ho Chi Minh City sets the goal of quantifying the carbon storage capacity of Can Gio’s mangrove forests as a basis for participating in the global carbon market and environmental forest payment services in Vietnam. Additionally, 100% of eligible agency and unit headquarters will be installed with rooftop solar power systems, and the construction project for a wastewater treatment system with a volume of 1,000 cubic meters per day and night in Thanh An commune will be completed.

By 2030, Can Gio aims to achieve an 80% public passenger transport rate, with 100% of public transport vehicles in Can Gio using clean energy. Additionally, 100% of solid waste will be classified at the source and collected for treatment, meeting national technical regulations and environmental protection laws. Furthermore, the city targets a 40% treatment rate for urban wastewater, meeting technical standards.

In the 2030 phase, Can Gio will complete the wastewater treatment system in Binh Khanh commune and An Nghia ward, as well as the collection and drainage system for wastewater generated in residential areas of coastal communes and towns, including Long Hoa and Can Thanh. It will also construct and operate coastal wind power plants.
