Vietnam’s tea exports for May 2025 reached 10,771 tons, with a value of nearly $18.6 million, according to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs. This marks a 22% increase in volume and a 26% surge in value compared to the previous month.

Accumulated over the first five months of 2025, the country exported 46,460 tons of tea, valued at nearly $76.5 million. These figures represent a 3.2% decline in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2024.

Pakistan stood as the largest importer of Vietnamese tea during this period, purchasing 13,800 tons worth over $26.15 million, accounting for a 29.7% market share.

China, with its massive population, ranked second, importing 4,900 tons of tea valued at $7.76 million. This reflects a 5.4% increase in volume and a significant 15.4% surge in value. The average export price for tea in the first five months of 2025 reached $1,581 per ton, a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year.

Notably, the United States imported 2,671 tons of tea from Vietnam, valued at over $3.8 million, during the first five months. This marks a 15.1% decrease in volume and a 13.9% drop in value. However, the average export price for this commodity increased slightly by 1.4% to $1,440 per ton compared to the previous year.

Currently, the US is the fifth-largest market for Vietnamese tea exports, accounting for a 5.7% market share. The tea imported from Vietnam falls under main HS codes such as 0902.10 (green tea), 0902.20 (black tea), 0902.30 (oolong tea, semi-fermented), and 0902.40 (flavored tea). While these products enjoy a 0% MFN tax rate, since April 2025, the US has imposed an additional base tax of 10% on goods from Vietnam, bringing the total import tax on tea to 10%.

By 2030, tea export volume is forecasted to reach 136,500 tons, growing at an average rate of 0.82% per year, and accounting for approximately 80% of the total tea production. Vietnam’s tea production is concentrated mainly in provinces such as Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Yen Bai, and Ha Giang. Despite its potential, the export price of Vietnamese tea in the international market remains low.
