From the oil and gas and power sectors to agriculture and retail, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien’s high-level engagements during his June 2025 trip to the United States demonstrated a strong determination to negotiate and address trade issues between the two countries, aiming to boost bilateral trade relations.
EXXONMOBIL, NIKE, WALMART: STRATEGIC PARTNERS IN THE JOURNEY TOWARDS A GREENER SUPPLY CHAIN
In a meeting with the Vice President of ExxonMobil on June 10, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien commended the 16 years of collaboration between the two parties, especially in oil and gas exploration and development and power projects in Vietnam. The Minister emphasized the importance of timely implementation of the Ca Voi Xanh project, a key energy project with the potential to enhance energy security while pursuing emission reduction and carbon neutrality goals.
ExxonMobil expressed optimism about Vietnam’s investment environment, considering it a bright spot in Southeast Asia due to political stability, institutional reforms, and sustainable development commitments. The company pledged to share this positive message with the White House, the Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to foster bilateral relations. They affirmed, “Vietnam is one of ExxonMobil’s key markets in the region, and we expect the Vietnamese government to continue facilitating large-scale energy projects.”
On June 11, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien met with two leading global companies, Nike and Walmart, which are quintessential examples of global value chains with strong connections to Vietnam. Nike currently produces nearly 50% of its footwear in Vietnam, employing over 450,000 workers.
During the meeting, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien welcomed Nike’s long-term presence and responsible conduct, highlighting their role not just as an investor but as a strategic partner in sustainable development. He frankly shared concerns about U.S. tax policies that could impact the supply chain and proposed specific support measures.
With Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, the discussion focused on expanding procurement from Vietnam, especially value-added and environmentally friendly products. The Minister requested Walmart to establish a strategic procurement center in Vietnam, share technical standards, and support supplier capacity enhancement. These practical suggestions demonstrated Vietnam’s commitment to accompanying large FDI corporations in creating a green, flexible, and transparent supply chain.
VIETNAM-US TRADE NEGOTIATIONS: PROACTIVE, GOOD FAITH, AND MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL
On the same day, June 11, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien held an important meeting with Senator Roger Marshall, a prominent figure in agriculture, trade, and innovation in the United States.
During the meeting, the Minister conveyed messages from General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, reaffirming Vietnam’s desire to build a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States based on mutual respect and sustainable development.

“Vietnam has always shown goodwill in negotiating the Reciprocal Trade Agreement and is ready to open its market and offer preferential treatment to U.S. goods,” the Minister emphasized. He also requested that the U.S. take corresponding steps to ensure a balance of interests, in line with each country’s level of development and international commitments. Senator Marshall expressed his support and appreciation for Vietnam’s proactive and serious approach to the negotiations. He pledged to convey his views to the U.S. administration to encourage positive steps and hoped for further development in economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in agriculture, biotechnology, and aviation.
Throughout these engagements, Vietnam has demonstrated a proactive attitude, not only proposing and engaging in dialogue but also offering to collaborate on resolving policy, tariff, and technical standard issues. These strategic moves are expected to gradually establish Vietnam as a trusted hub in the global supply chain network in the post-COVID era and amid the increasingly complex geo-economic landscape.
