Xiaomi made a stunning announcement that its YU7 model received an astonishing 289,000 orders within just one hour of its launch. In the following 18 hours, the number of locked-in orders climbed to 240,000, filling up the factory’s production capacity until early 2027.
Xiaomi currently operates a single factory in Beijing, divided into two phases. The first phase (F1) began construction in April 2022, spanning an area of 720,000 square meters, and was completed in June 2023. Mass production at the F1 factory commenced in March 2024, following the launch of the SU7 model. F1 has an annual output capacity of 150,000 vehicles.

The second phase (F2) started construction in July 2024, with a smaller area of 531,000 square meters, and is expected to be completed by June 2025. The latest update in May indicated that F2 was set to begin mass production in June, but there has been no official announcement regarding the completion of F2 since then. F2 also boasts an annual output of 150,000 vehicles.
Mass production at F2 is anticipated to commence soon, possibly in July. While Xiaomi can ramp up production at the new factory swiftly, the 240,000 locked-in orders mean that the cars are sold out for the next year, with some customers having to wait until early 2027. And this is just from the orders placed within the first 18 hours.
Balancing production between the YU7 SUV and SU7 sedan to meet demand will be a significant challenge for Xiaomi. In the first week of June, the number of registered SU7s witnessed a sharp decline, despite the growing electric vehicle market. The waiting time for the SU7 has also lengthened considerably due to Xiaomi’s management of factory resources between the YU7 and SU7, with a 47-50 week wait for the SU7 Pro and 41-44 weeks for the standard version.

Xiaomi is also grappling with speculation, as some individuals resell locked-in orders to those unwilling to wait. Xiaomi has stated that orders are non-transferable and cannot be traded.
Xiaomi’s hope lies in the third phase of the factory (F3), for which the company has acquired an additional 485,100 square meters of land near the current factory, as announced by the Beijing municipal government last week. No further information about F3 has been disclosed yet.
