According to the General Statistics Office, agricultural production in January 2024 focused mainly on sowing, caring for winter-spring rice, and planting flowers across the country. Forestry production focused on preparing nurseries and caring for seedlings for afforestation and the Tet tree-planting movement of the Year of the Horse. Aquaculture production was boosted to meet the demand for consumption during the Lunar New Year.

EFFORTS TO PRODUCE FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR

As of January 15, 2024, the country has sown 1,821.4 thousand ha of winter-spring rice, equivalent to 96.9% compared to the same period last year. In which, the northern provinces achieved 63.4 thousand ha, equal to 66.6% due to the 2024 seasonal schedule being later than 2023; the southern provinces reached 1,757.9 thousand ha, equal to 98.5%, of which the Mekong Delta region reached 1,427.7 thousand ha, equal to 99.5%.

In addition to sowing winter-spring rice, provinces across the country are also planting flowers. The area of maize and peanuts decreased compared to the same period last year mainly due to low economic efficiency, so people tended to switch to growing sweet potatoes, soybeans, and various vegetables to serve the consumption of people during the Lunar New Year.

“The aquaculture output in January 2024 is estimated at 590.1 thousand tons, an increase of 3.1% compared to the same period last year, including: fish reached 440.2 thousand tons, an increase of 3.1%; shrimp reached 54.6 thousand tons, an increase of 3.8%; other aquaculture reached 95.3 thousand tons, an increase of 2.9%”.

Regarding the forestry sector, the newly planted forest area across the country in January 2024 is estimated at 7.8 thousand ha, a decrease of 4.3% compared to the same period last year due to unfavorable weather in some localities affecting the progress of afforestation, including Nghe An reaching 94.5% compared to the same period last year; Quang Ngai reaching 96.7%, and Yen Bai reaching 60%; The dispersed planted forest trees reached 4 million trees, a decrease of 2%; exploited timber production reached 1,030.5 thousand m3, an increase of 3.6%. In the first month of the year, the damaged forest area was 31.5 ha, a decrease of 0.8% compared to the same period last year.

The aquaculture sector has made efforts to produce from the beginning of the year. The output of aquaculture in the month is estimated at 313.3 thousand tons, an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period last year, of which fish reached 228.6 thousand tons, an increase of 1.6%; shrimp reached 44.6 thousand tons, an increase of 3.7%. The output of tra fish in the month is estimated at 96.7 thousand tons, an increase of 2.2% compared to the same period last year due to the increasing demand and prices of raw tra fish in the Mekong Delta.

The output of cultured shrimp in the month increased compared to the same period last year due to the increasing domestic demand during the Lunar New Year as well as the increase in processing to serve exports. The output of white leg shrimp is estimated at 24.9 thousand tons, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period last year; the output of vannamei shrimp reached 14.9 thousand tons, an increase of 1.4%.

In terms of fishing, in the first month of the year, fishermen stayed longer at sea to take advantage of fishing before the Lunar New Year holiday. Thanks to that, the exploited aquatic output reached 276.8 thousand tons, an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period last year. In which, marine exploitation is estimated at 258 thousand tons, an increase of 4.5% compared to January 2023.

EXPORT OF ALL COMMODITY GROUPS INCREASED HIGH

Regarding the export of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in January 2024, the export turnover reached USD 5.14 billion, an increase of 79.2% compared to the same period last year. This result is thanks to the contribution of all commodity groups which increased. Specifically, forestry products reached USD 1.49 billion, an increase of 72.5%; aquatic products reached USD 730 million, an increase of 60.8%; agricultural products reached USD 2.71 billion, an increase of 93.8%; livestock reached USD 36 million, an increase of 3.5%; input materials reached USD 177 million, an increase of 49.2%.

“In January 2023, exports to the Americas reached USD 1.18 billion, an increase of 93.6%; Africa reached USD 104 million, an increase of 185.4%; Asia reached USD 2.52 billion, an increase of 86.3%; Europe reached USD 532 million, an increase of 38.2% and Oceania reached USD 78 million, an increase of 100.9%”.

Regarding the domestic market, the value of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products for most items tends to increase compared to December 2023 due to high demand during the Lunar New Year, but is relatively stable and fluctuates. The two items that continue to increase sharply are: bud tea and hook tea increased 19 – 30%; bell peppers increased 33%; some items increased slightly such as black pepper increased 5%; coffee increased 4 – 9%; ordinary rice increased over 6%; Cat Chu mango increased 8%; red dragon fruit increased 3.4%; white dragon fruit increased 4.5%; raw shrimp increased 4%; raw fish increased 5-6.7%.

Meanwhile, the livestock group tends to decrease in price from the late months of 2023 until now. Specifically, live pig prices decreased by 10.5%; live cattle prices decreased by 2.5%; colored feather chicken prices decreased by 2.3%; industrial chicken prices decreased by 6.8%. However, in general, the supply of agricultural products is abundant and ensures consumption during the Lunar New Year.
