Quat Dao Plum Blossoms: Small Businesses Stand Firm, Refusing to Lower Prices Despite Decreased Purchasing Power

On the 26th day of the Lunar New Year, the Xuân Tây Hồ flower market in Hanoi is filled with peach blossom, kumquat, and fresh flowers. Some merchants complain that, although it is "lively," many people come just to admire and take photos for check-ins, leading to a decrease in purchasing power compared to before.

As Tet approaches, the Spring flower market becomes more bustling. At the Tay Ho Spring Flower Market, Lac Long Quan Street (Tay Ho District – Hanoi), thousands of peach blossoms and kumquat trees overflow.

In these days, this place is always crowded with buyers and flower lovers.

The main Spring flowers this year are still the most popular types of peach blossoms, with an overwhelming number, flooding the space of the flower market area.

According to many people’s assessments, the price of peach blossoms this year is quite high compared to last year.

The usual peach blossom branches and regular peach blossoms have prices ranging from 500,000 to over 1,000,000 VND.

The root types of peach blossoms, bonsai miniatures are also quite diverse with prices ranging from 600,000 – 3,000,000 VND. Although there are customers, they are few, and this year the demand for this type of peach blossom is not high.

The small branches of peach blossoms have affordable prices and are the best-selling ones, with a price range of about 45,000 – 70,000 VND.

In contrast to the peach blossoms, the number of kumquat trees in this area has decreased by half compared to previous years. A shop owner said that this shift is due to the low purchasing power of customers in general and the taste of customers this year has shifted. A corner of the kumquat trees is quite crowded, but most customers only look and choose, and the demand for this type of tree is not high this year.

The prices of ornamental kumquat trees do not vary much, ranging from 300,000 to 850,000 VND, but there are not many customers. Many people are tightening their economy and saving money by transporting the trees themselves.

Mr. Hung, a shop owner who has two stalls selling peach blossoms and ornamental kumquat trees at Tay Ho Flower Market and along Ve Ho Street (Tay Ho) shared: “Peach blossoms this year tend to surpass other types of flowers during Tet. I have imported many according to the needs and preferences of customers this year, people are quite fond of the Huyen peach shape from Nhat Tan flower village”. Huyen peach branches of Nhat Tan (Hanoi) are fading peach varieties, with thinner flowers than bich peach. According to some shop owners, to have the Huyen peach shape, the orchard owners have to graft the peach buds, then skillfully bend them. It takes 2-3 years of care to be able to cut branches for sale. Even some trees have to be grown for 3-4 years to have a big, beautiful shape.

The price of Huyen peach is much higher than the traditional peach branches. Huyen peach has prices ranging from 700,000 – 4,000,000 VND/branch depending on the size, while regular peach branches have prices ranging from 200,000 – 500,000 VND/branch.

According to Mr. Hung, in recent days, although there are many Peach flowers, especially Huyen Peach, but the supply is quite large, the demand is still quite low. Another shop owner sympathizes and shares with a little annoyance: “There are many items and many onlookers, but few buyers. Even many groups of customers mainly come to take pictures and check-in”.

According to the actual observation of the reporter, many people take advantage of the space of Peach flowers at the market to take photos for Tet.

Some even deliberately prepare costumes to come to the flower market just to take check-in photos without buying flowers.

However, besides that, there are also many people, many families who combine shopping for Spring flowers with taking commemorative photos.

Even if they haven’t bought or have no intention of buying, there are still vibrant check-in photos capturing the upcoming Spring atmosphere.

In another area on Lac Long Quan Street, hundreds of ancient peach trees are gathered for sale, but few people pay attention to them,
