Government Inspector: Dealing with corruption with the spirit of “no escape”

From 2021 until now, the work of detecting, prosecuting, investigating, and handling corruption cases has seen new developments in uncovering the nature, motive, and misappropriation of assets with the intertwining of the state and non-state sectors.

The Government Inspectorate (GI) recently issued a report on the result of addressing and responding to voters’ recommendations before the 6th session of the 15th National Assembly.

Previously, voters in An Giang province sent recommendations to the GI, acknowledging and highly appreciating the ongoing efforts in anti-corruption and anti-negative activities.

Voters suggested further strengthening the work of anti-corruption and anti-negative activities, focusing on prevention and handling serious acts of corruption involving large sums of money. At the same time, effectively protect whistleblowers in corrupt and negative acts.

In response to this content, the GI stated that in the past period, under the concentrated leadership and unified direction of the Central Executive Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, directly led by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Head of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption and Negative Activities; the efforts and attempts of all levels, sectors, localities, and organizations have made significant breakthroughs; corruption and negative activities have continued to be restrained, prevented and tended to decrease.

According to the GI, the investigation, prosecution, and trial of corruption cases have been carried out resolutely and strictly; inspection, examination, and auditing have been strengthened, promptly detecting and handling violations strictly; gradually tightening discipline and regulations in the Party apparatus, the State, and the political system.

“The role of elected agencies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, member organizations, communication agencies, press, and people, businesses… in anti-corruption and negative activities has been increasingly focused and promoted”- the GI said.

From 2021 until now, the work of detecting, initiating, investigating, and handling corruption cases has had new points, which clarify the nature, the interested elements, the misappropriation of assets with the intertwining between the state sector and the non-state sector, the collusion between officials and businesses, taking advantage of policies for exploitation…

Functional agencies have concentrated forces, proactively deployed prevention measures and clarified struggles, initiating new cases, and resolutely handled, disclosing violators, including many high-ranking officials under the Central Executive Committee’s management; many serious and prolonged corruption acts have been detected, initiated, investigated, prosecuted, and tried promptly.

Anti-corruption in agencies performing anti-corruption and negative activities

Many localities have proactively detected and handled many cases and incidents of serious corruption and negative activities that have received significant public attention. At the same time, resolutely handled offenders, including those on the run with the spirit of “escape also cannot escape guilt”.

Typical examples are cases of negligence causing serious consequences; taking advantage of positions and powers while performing official duties; trading fake medicine that occurred in Ho Chi Minh City, Drug Administration (Ministry of Health); cases of taking advantage of positions and powers while performing official duties, receiving bribes that occurred in units under the Border Guard High Command, the Border Guard Command; cases of violating regulations on management and use of state assets causing loss, wastefulness that occurred in Binh Duong Import and Export Production Corporation; the rescue flight case with 54 defendants; AIC Joint Stock Company case; Viet Á Technology Joint Stock Company case; FLC Group; Tan Hoang Minh Group…

Notably, in recent years, the detection and handling of corruption crimes by functional agencies have increased in the number of cases nationwide, both at the central and local levels, with increasingly strict and thorough handling.

In particular, according to the inspection agency, anti-corruption and negative activities have been enhanced within law protection agencies, agencies performing anti-corruption and negative activities. 

The number of cases of corruption in the judicial activities of the Supreme People’s Procuracy has been prosecuted: in 2019, 15 cases were prosecuted; in 2020, 25 cases/26 defendants were prosecuted; in 2021, 24 cases/30 defendants were prosecuted; in 2022, 40 cases/48 defendants were prosecuted; in 2023, 71/126 defendants were prosecuted.
