According to many experts, managers, and businesses, the rice market domestically and internationally will continue to be vibrant in the coming time, and the export price of rice will remain high as the world increases its rice imports. This is a great opportunity for the Vietnamese rice industry.

CREATING EXTRAORDINARY RECORDS

The picture of the Vietnamese rice industry in 2023 has many bright spots, events that leave a proud mark.

The first mark: Record in rice exports in 2023 when both volume and value reached their peak, 8.2 million tons and 4.78 billion USD, corresponding to increases of 15.4% and 36.6% compared to 2022. The Philippines continues to be Vietnam’s number one market, currently accounting for about 35% of Vietnam’s rice export market share. In 2023, the amount of rice exported to this country reached 2.86 million tons, equivalent to 1.54 billion USD. Following are Indonesia, China, and African countries.

The second mark: The average export price of Vietnamese rice surpassed its competitors to become the world leader. According to information from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), export rice prices increased dramatically in 2023. In November 2023, the export price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam reached $653/ton, nearly $93 higher than the same type of rice from Thailand (priced at $560/ton), and $90 higher than from Pakistan (priced at $563/ton). For 25% broken rice, Vietnamese rice sold for $638/ton, $118 higher than the same product from Thailand ($520/ton); $150 higher than Pakistan ($488/ton).

“Vietnamese rice is honored as the best rice in the world, once again affirming the quality and reputation of Vietnamese rice in the international market. It will certainly have a positive impact on the image of Vietnamese rice as well as the rice export of Vietnam, especially high-quality rice.”

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production.

The third mark: The record-breaking rice harvest volume ensures both domestic demand and meets the record-breaking rice export volume, surpassing 8 million tons for the first time. One of the highlights is the high proportion of fragrant and specialty rice varieties. Specifically, the OM18 type accounts for 41%, OM5451 type accounts for about 19%, and the ST (21/24/25) type accounts for about 9%.

The fourth mark: Vietnamese rice is honored as the best rice in the world at the International Rice Conference 2023 held in Cebu, Philippines from November 28 to 30, 2023.

The fifth mark: For the first time, the International Rice Festival of Vietnam, an international rice industry event, was held (the previous five rice festivals were only organized domestically), in the context of Vietnam striving to become a pioneering country in producing high-quality rice, reducing emissions, and developing towards green and sustainable growth in connection with the project “Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality rice cultivation with low emissions linked to green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2030”. The festival was organized in Hau Giang from December 11-14, 2023.

The sixth mark: For the first time, Vietnam has a person holding the highest leadership position of IRRI. In 2023, Dr. Cao Duc Phat, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, former Deputy Head of the Central Economic Committee, was unanimously elected Chairman of the IRRI Board of Trustees.

IRRI is headquartered in the Philippines and has offices in 16 countries with the mission of providing rice scientists and producers with the genetic information and materials needed to develop improved rice varieties and improve rice production. IRRI has had decades of cooperation with Vietnam. Of the 226 rice varieties grown in Vietnam, 25% are varieties developed by IRRI, and 52% are varieties developed by Vietnamese scientists using parent varieties derived from IRRI.
