Mitsubishi Triton, the latest generation of pick-up trucks, made its debut in Thailand last year and has now been officially introduced to the Japanese market. This comeback marks the end of Triton’s 12-year absence in Japan, and consumers in this country have received the car in an even more enthusiastic way.

Specifically, on the opening day of sales, February 15th, the new generation Mitsubishi Triton received over 1,300 orders, exceeding the expected monthly sales target of 200 cars six times over.

Notably, nearly 90% of the orders for the new generation Mitsubishi Triton in Japan are for the highest-end GSR version (similar to the Triton Athlete in Southeast Asia). The remaining minority is for the standard GLS version. Both configurations feature the Super Select 4WD II drivetrain, allowing for full-time 4WD operation.

Unlike in Australia or Southeast Asia, where pick-up trucks are practical vehicles for a wide range of customers, Japan sees pick-up trucks as “luxury cars”. Only those with good financial conditions can afford to buy pick-up trucks instead of the “people’s car” kei cars of the Japanese people.

In Japan, pick-up trucks are classified as commercial vehicles even when owned by private customers. They are required to undergo quality inspections every 6 months – a factor that ordinary vehicle owners are reluctant to comply with because of the time and money involved.

The new Mitsubishi Triton starts at 4.98 million yen in Japan, equivalent to 814.8 million VND. This starting price is higher than the GR Sport variant of the Toyota Hilux (4.3 million yen – 703.7 million VND).
