Inside the illegal mansion of the gold tycoon in the special-use forest land in Hai Van, Danang city

Reporters from the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper recently captured the scene inside the mansion of wealthy businessman Ngo Van Quang, director of a gold mining company in Quang Nam province, who illegally constructed a mansion on Hai Van mountain (Hoa Hiep Bac ward, Lien Chieu district)

Earlier, at the end of 2014, the Lien Chieu district People’s Committee (Danang city) discovered that this mansion was built on special-use forest land in Hai Van. After several fines, the Lien Chieu district required Mr. Quang to complete the demolition, relocate all assets, and return the land to its original state before December 31, 2018

However, until now, nearly 10 years later, many solid houses made of reinforced concrete and wood, as well as many other construction works, still exist in this mansion

The wall system surrounding the mansion is still intact, spanning hundreds of meters. In addition, the entrance gates to the mansion are always tightly closed, not allowing outsiders to enter

Inside this mansion, there are still some people living, taking care of plants, raising fish, and protecting the property

Inside the mansion, there is a fish pond, a dike system for the Luong stream flowing through the garden

Although the Lien Chieu district People’s Committee requested the owner of the mansion to demolish all the construction works, return the land to its original state before December 31, 2018, there are still many solidly-built structures remaining in the mansion

The center of the mansion is a row of wooden houses that remain nearly intact

Some valuable wood and items are gathered in the mansion, which the owner has not yet moved as promised. Speaking with Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, a leader of the Hoa Hiep Bac ward People’s Committee (Lien Chieu district) said that since 2018, after partially demolishing the violations, there are still remnants. The local authorities are trying to manage and prevent further new construction

“As far as I know, there is a unit currently drafting a proposal requesting the district and city to lease the land for 50 years according to the Land Law for business purposes. However, how to handle the situation is the authority of the district and city” – this person said

It is known that Quang’s illegally built mansion has a total area of over 1,400m2 on Chim Chim hill, Nam Hai Van special-use forest. Since the end of 2014, the government discovered and fined it. In January 2016, Mr. Quang submitted a voluntary demolition application, but the demolition process took a long time

After that, the Lien Chieu district People’s Committee issued a “final notice” requiring Mr. Quang to demolish all architectural structures, return the forest to its original state before December 31, 2018. However, up to now, after almost 10 years since the discovery, more than 6 years since the “final notice,” the mansion of the gold tycoon still exists
