Container cargo increased by 27% compared to the same period in 2023
For container cargo, the volume of cargo through seaports, calculated in TEUs, in the first 2 months of 2024 reached an estimated 4.054 million TEUs, an increase of 27% compared to the same period. Specifically, export cargo reached 1.323 million TEUs (an increase of 20%), import cargo reached 1.252 million TEUs (an increase of 19%), and domestic cargo reached 1.478 million TEUs (an increase of 40%).
In January 2024, there was also an increase in the volume of cargo through seaports. Specifically, the volume of cargo in the first month of 2024 reached 68.716 million tons (excluding transshipment cargo not loaded at ports), an increase of 43% compared to the same period in 2023. The volume of cargo, calculated in TEUs, reached 2.4 million TEUs, an increase of 52%.
All types of cargo showed an upward trend. Export cargo reached 17.383 million tons, an increase of 29%. Import cargo reached 20.931 million tons, an increase of 49%. Domestic cargo reached 30.127 million tons, an increase of 47%, and transshipment cargo reached 275 thousand tons.
The volume of cargo through seaports by sea vessels (excluding transshipment cargo not unloaded) in January 2024 reached 47.404 million tons, an increase of 45% compared to the same period in 2023. The volume of cargo through inland waterway vessels reached 21.312 million tons, an increase of 38%.
According to the explanation of the Maritime Administration, the high growth rate in January compared to the same period last year is due to the fact that January 2023 was the Lunar New Year month, when the volume of cargo was the lowest. Meanwhile, January 2024 is the month before the Lunar New Year – the time when the volume of cargo is usually the highest of the year in preparation for the Tet holiday.
The highest growth in cargo volume was recorded by three seaports, up to 53%
Regions with the highest cargo volume in the country, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Hai Phong, all saw growth rates ranging from 43-53% compared to the same period, Quang Ninh increased by 34.2%, and some other areas saw increased volume, such as Hue with a 200% increase, Thanh Hoa with a 64.8% increase, Dong Thap and Nghe An with a 58% increase, Quang Ngai with a 62% increase, and Dong Nai with a 32% increase. Nha Trang, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, and Can Tho all saw increases of more than 10%. Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, and An Giang recorded a low decrease.
Along with the increase in cargo volume, the volume of container cargo through ports in January 2024 also increased significantly by 51% compared to the same period in 2023.
In particular, the areas with the largest volume of container cargo through ports, such as Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Vung Tau, all saw an increase of 40-60% compared to the same period. Da Nang, Dong Nai, Nghe An, Dong Thap, and Can Tho all saw increases ranging from 49-144%, and no area experienced a decrease in the volume of cargo through ports.
