To prepare for the operation of the urban railway Nhon – Hanoi station (elevated section from Depot to S8 station) in June 2024, the Hanoi Metro Management Board (MRB) is urgently conducting practical training (RAMP-UP) for 50 trainee drivers, supported by Operational Support Consultants.

This training session includes 50 trainee drivers and takes about 4 months to complete their professional training for the Metro line’s commercial operation in June 2024.

Mr. Benoit Picout, a train driver trainer from Systra, said that train drivers have undergone 7 training sessions and this is the final session, lasting for 15 days. Currently, the focus is on training regarding safety regulations for the trainees.

“The training process and the examination for train drivers are conducted very strictly. Before the train is put into trial run, train drivers must proficiently perform all operation procedures and handle various situations,” said Mr. Benoit Picout.

The RAMP-UP is divided into 2 main phases. Phase 1 focuses on operational personnel (personnel of the OCC control room and train drivers), which are 2 important teams ensuring safe and efficient train operations. Phase 2 includes all remaining personnel of the OCC control room and train drivers, who will coordinate with personnel of the stations and maintenance team.

The RAMP-UP practical training session 2 includes training for station staff, train drivers and OCC control room. Regarding station training, there are positions such as Station Master, Shift Supervisor, General Management Staff, Ticket Staff, and Safety Staff. About train driver training, there are positions such as Operator, Train Driver, and Train Technical Management.

The OCC control room training includes positions such as OCC Supervisor, Train Controller, Power Supply Coordinator, Signal Supervisor, Train Control and Environment Control Staff…

Mr. Bui Van Thanh, a trainee driver, said: “I am currently a train driver for the Cat Linh – Ha Dong line. In terms of technology, these two railway lines are different, but the operation procedures are relatively similar. With experience in driving trains on the Cat Linh – Ha Dong line, learning to drive the train for me is much easier.”

“For the Nhon – Hanoi urban railway line, the operation process is more convenient with new technology. For example, the observation task has been completely replaced by cameras instead of having to stop the train and go outside like the Cat Linh – Ha Dong line,” shared Mr. Thanh.

Mr. Do Phi Anh, a trainee driver, said that before practicing on the train, he had nearly a year to learn the theory. Ensuring safety is highly emphasized, and the train inspection process usually takes place 15 minutes before the train starts and departs. “The operation procedures and train driving process are not too difficult. After being trained and practicing multiple times, we have become quite proficient and ready to operate the train when it is put into commercial operation,” emphasized Mr. Do Phi Anh.

These are new technologies that are not yet available on the Cat Linh – Ha Dong urban railway line, such as the camera system, obstacle sensors at the doors, and anti-drowsiness system.

Among the 50 trainee drivers, there are female trainee drivers as well.

Trainee drivers must drive 3,000 km on the railway before being awarded the driver’s certificate.

The RAMP-UP practical training session 2 will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday, immediately after the completion of the first training session, and will continue until the start of the trial run phase. Trial Run is the final step in the 8-step testing and system adjustment process before the project is put into operation.
