The Highest Export Turnover in the Country in January 2024 Comes from This Local Area, Not Bac Ninh or HCMC

According to data from the General Department of Customs and the General Statistics Office, despite being the Lunar New Year holiday, Vietnam's exports in January 2024 continued to grow significantly compared to the same period.

Specifically, the total value of the country’s import and export goods reached 65.43 billion USD in January 2024, an increase of 7.5% compared to December 2023. Of which, the export value reached 34.53 billion USD, an increase of 9.7% (equivalent to an increase of 3.07 billion USD); the import value reached 30.9 billion USD, an increase of 5.1% (equivalent to an increase of 1.49 billion USD). The trade balance of goods in January 2024 had a surplus of 3.63 billion USD.

Compared to the same period in 2023, the report stated that the total value of the country’s import and export goods in January 2024 increased by 40.3%; of which exports increased by 46%, equivalent to an increase of 10.89 billion USD, and imports increased by 34.4%, equivalent to an increase of 7.91 billion USD.

In terms of exports, according to the General Department of Customs, the total value of Vietnam’s export goods in January 2024 reached 34.53 billion USD, the highest level since August 2022, an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous month and an increase of 46% compared to the same period last year.

Compared to the previous month, the value of export goods in January 2024 increased mainly due to the group of various types of phones and components, which increased by 50.4%, equivalent to an increase of 1.87 billion USD.

Compared to the same period last year, the country’s exports in January 2024 saw an absolute increase in 44 out of 45 main commodity groups (except crude oil, which decreased by 15.9%). Specifically, the highest absolute increase was recorded for industrial goods such as computers, electronic products, and components, which increased by 68.3%, equivalent to an increase of 2.17 billion USD; machinery, equipment, tools, and accessories increased by 38.7%, equivalent to an increase of 1.21 billion USD; textile and garment products increased by 39%, equivalent to an increase of 877 million USD; wood and wood products increased by 83.1%, equivalent to an increase of 667 million USD; various types of footwear increased by 43.8%, equivalent to an increase of 600 million USD;…

Regarding the geographical distribution, data from the General Department of Customs shows that in January 2024, 9 provinces and cities recorded export turnover of over 1 billion USD.

Notably, compared to January 2023, the ranking of export turnover of some localities in January 2024 has changed. Specifically, the locality with the highest export turnover in the country in January 2024 is Thai Nguyen, with an export value of 3.8 billion USD.


In January 2023, Bac Ninh was the locality with the highest export turnover in the country, with an export turnover of 3.3 billion USD. The second is Ho Chi Minh City, with an export turnover of 2.6 billion USD in January 2023. This was followed by Thai Nguyen, with an export turnover of 2.5 billion USD.

Meanwhile, the place with the highest export turnover in the country in 2023 – Ho Chi Minh City recorded an export turnover of 3.75 billion USD in January 2024, ranking second in the country. Bac Ninh ranked third, with an export turnover of 3.09 billion USD in January 2024. This was followed by Binh Duong, with an export turnover of 3.05 billion USD in January 2024.

In addition, several other localities surpassed the billion-dollar export milestone in the first month of the year, including Hai Phong (2.5 billion USD); Bac Giang (2.3 billion USD); Dong Nai (2.07 billion USD); Hanoi (1.5 billion USD); and Vinh Phuc (1.04 billion USD).

As for imports, the report from the General Department of Customs stated that the import value in January 2024 was 30.9 billion USD, an increase of 1.49 billion USD compared to the previous month and an increase of 7.9 billion USD compared to the same period last year.

Compared to December 2023, imports in the first month of 2024 increased in 31 out of 53 commodity groups, with the strongest increase in computers, electronic products, and components (reaching 8.56 billion USD, an increase of 446 million USD).

Compared to January 2023, imports in January 2024 increased significantly by 34.4%, equivalent to an increase of 7.9 billion USD due to more working days compared to the same period. Specifically, the largest increase was in the group of computers, electronic products, and components (increased by 2 billion USD).
