Many factories in Ho Chi Minh City are busy with orders, workers are happy to work overtime.

Last year, many businesses struggled with a shortage of orders, resulting in thousands of workers losing their jobs. As we enter the new year of 2024, some factories have finally secured long-term orders, lasting for several quarters or even the entire year. Lucky workers are now able to work overtime eagerly right after the Lunar New Year.

Excited About Overtime Work

Despite being in her seventh month of pregnancy, Miss Dinh Thi Minh, a worker at Tai Loc Leather Footwear Company (Truong Thanh Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) is still very excited to do overtime work with her colleagues.

Minh said that during the recent Lunar New Year holiday, the company paid a 13th month salary and gave bonuses to the workers. After the holiday, she heard that the company had an abundant source of orders, so they would start overtime work from March onwards. All the workers were thrilled because the work here is stable and the company takes good care of its employees’ lives.

Minh’s salary, combined with regular overtime, amounts to 12-13 million VND per month: “Whenever I’m tired, I go home, and if I’m not tired, I still stay for overtime. In general, my baby is well-behaved and supportive, so I’m healthy enough to work extra to earn more income. If I’m pregnant, I would be entitled to an extra hour of rest, so if I work overtime, it’s enough to make ends meet and have some savings.”

Retaining Skilled Workers

Mrs. Huang Hsu Chuan, the Chief Workshop Manager of Triple Vietnam Garment Manufacturing Company (Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the company currently has 1,700 workers. With the abundant amount of orders at present, the company is recruiting about 300 more workers to meet the requirements of its partners.

The company is especially focused on recruiting and retaining skilled labor to meet the demand for orders and create a high-quality enterprise. The company has been accelerating its operations after the Lunar New Year, seizing the opportunity with new orders and new customers showing positive signs.

At Oasis Garment Manufacturing Company (Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City), traditional orders have returned until the end of 2024. Since the beginning of this year, the factory has not recorded any worker resignations. This helps the company stabilize its workforce to serve the new orders it has received. The company has recently recruited nearly 40 employees to open new production lines and work on new orders.

Ms. Luu Thuan Hanh, Deputy General Director of Oasis Garment Manufacturing Company, said that the company always cares about the lives of its workers and considers them as valuable assets. The company prioritizes keeping experienced workers in order to utilize their skills and meet the demands of the orders.

“Both enterprises and workers face their own difficulties. Workers also want to have their own freelance job or return to their families, while enterprises still want to retain them to have a high-skilled workforce. Therefore, we have to find ways to care for them even more so that they feel like this is their second family. Then, they will stay with us,” said Ms. Luu Thuan Hanh.

According to the Management Board of Industrial and Export Processing Zones in Ho Chi Minh City, last year, many enterprises faced difficulties with orders, leading to a decrease in workers’ income. This year, many workers want to keep their current jobs and are not eager to change jobs after the Lunar New Year, so the labor force of enterprises is relatively stable. During the first few months of this year, many companies in industrial zones in Ho Chi Minh City recruited more than 10,500 workers to serve production.
